A brand new poster for Scream 2022 uses a collage of tiny Ghostface masks to create a giant Ghostface portrait. The upcoming film is a reboot-style sequel and the fifth entry in the franchise that began in 1996 with Wes Craven's original classic. Craven, who also directed horror classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Last House on the Left, went on to make every sequel in the franchise through 2011's Scream 4 before passing away in 2015. His mantle will be taken up by Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet for the new film.

Perhaps the most iconic element of the Scream franchise is Ghostface, the killer draped in black robes and bearing a mask reminiscent of the Edward Munch painting The Scream. Although the costume is donned by many different killers throughout the franchise, the menacing, knife-wielding killer has appeared in every film in the franchise to menace Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends. The nickname "Ghostface" isn't generally spoken onscreen, though it does come from an offhand joke made by Rose McGowan's character in the original film before she is murdered in the cat flap of a garage door.

On the official Scream Twitter, a brand new poster has been released. The image shows the iconic Ghostface mask made up of hundreds of other tiny Ghostface masks along with the caption, "You'll be seeing me. Happy Halloween." It boggles the eye a little bit, but it leaves one with the impression of the killer looming threateningly behind the poster. Check out the full-size image below:

Ghostface isn't the only Scream stalwart to be returning for the new film. In addition to Sidney Prescott, the film will feature Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, and Marley Shelton as Deputy - now Sheriff - Judy Hicks. The film will also star franchise newcomers including Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Mason Gooding, Dylan Minnette, Kyle Gallner, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mikey Madison.

This new poster image is likely a reference to the recursive nature of the Scream franchise overall, but especially the specific way that the new film will be handling the character. This film's Ghostface is very aware of the legacy of the seven Ghostfaces that came before, and is in fact targeting people who are related to the original characters. The idea of using all the other iterations of an idea to form something recognizable but new is exactly the feeling that this new film is going for.
