A new photo from next year's Scream finds Ghostface getting closer to their next unwitting victim. 16 years after Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson reinvented the slasher genre with the first Scream, the franchise will return with a terrifying story that looks to take things back to its roots. This time directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the new Scream returns to Woodsboro as another Ghostface killer starts claiming victims one stab at a time. As the first official trailer for the movie revealed, Ghostface is targeting relatives of the original killers, meaning there are bound to be plenty of callbacks to the franchise's history.

Even beyond that, the 2022 Scream is bringing back the core trio of Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox. Reluctant experts in all things Ghostface, their characters Sidney, Dewey, and Gale are pulled into the fray when the murders start up. Scream also includes a whole host of newcomers, including Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Mason Gooding, Dylan Minnette, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Kyle Gallner, and Jenna Ortega.

It is likely one of those newcomers who is on the wrong side of Ghostface's knife in a new image from Scream, as revealed by Total Film (via GamesRadar+). The image finds Ghostface towering over an unlucky victim in a parking lot at night. The only light comes from a car's headlights, making the entire scene even more ominous. Check it out down below.

Scream 2022 Ghostface new victim

It remains to be seen just how high of a body count Scream will end up having, but all accounts so far point to this being one of the bloodiest installments in the franchise. The creative team behind the film are working hard to keep Ghostface's identity a secret, to the point where even those within the cast remained in the dark during filming. After four different movies and a television spin-off, the Scream franchise has enjoyed plenty shocking murders over the years, and hopefully the new movie will add some unique ones to its history. The above image reveals at least one character's end, and there will surely be more.

With over two months to go before Scream arrives in theaters, fans have only just begun to see what Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have in store for this new movie. The first trailer was filled with purposeful misdirection, so even those who have scoured every frame of the video will likely find themselves caught off-guard by the final film. There are already numerous theories about who could be behind the Ghostface mask, with Sidney being a surprisingly popular choice. Not everyone is on board with the idea, but no one can deny that the above image of a hapless victim cowering at Ghostface's feet would take on an even deeper meaning if Sidney was the person wielding the knife. Fans will find out for themselves next January.
