Courteney Cox celebrates the release of Scream by doing the viral "wipe it down" challenge featuring her famous character. The Friends star is part of the original cast of the horror franchise when it first hit theaters in 1996. She was introduced as Gale Weathers, a strong-willed journalist who was bent on investigating and stopping the chilling Ghostface murders that were happening in Woodsboro, California. Cox reprised her role in the succeeding four sequels including the latest modern-day reboot, which was released on January 14.

The latest Scream installment comes after original director Wes Craven's passing and is now helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. While it's billed as a relaunch of the hit slasher film series from the 90s, it is a continuation of the story and is a follow-up of 2011's Scream 4. The movie reunites Cox with co-stars Neve Campbell and David Arquette. The original trio team up once again as another string of mysterious murders hit their tragedy-laden town. This time, the Ghostface killer on the loose targets a group of teenagers, led by newcomers Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, and Jack Quaid.

Cox promoted Scream's release on Instagram by posting a hilarious video of herself doing the "wipe it down" challenge. Popularized by TikTok, the trend shows a person cleaning a mirror but seeing a shocking or confusing thing as they wipe the surface. In Cox's video, it's a picture of Gale Weathers from the original 1996 movie showing her iconic look of horror. "It's scary how late I am to this trend," Cox wrote in the caption. The official Scream movie account immediately picked up on Cox's post and joined the fun, replying: "Not as scary as those bangs," in reference to Gale's widely trolled hairstyle. In the latest Scream film, Gale is now working as a morning show host but is divorced from Dewey. Cox's character has definitely had a significant arc throughout the movies. While Gale Weathers was introduced as a self-serving, ambitious reporter, she has consistently displayed courage and concern for others. Because of her smart and no-nonsense attitude, Gale has survived the killer's attacks and even saved her companions on more than one occasion.

Based on the viewers' positive response, it will not be surprising if Scream gets another installment in the near future. However, the original cast's presence in the new movie feels as if they were only meant to introduce a new generation of characters and storyline. Whether or not Cox will step into Gale Weathers' shoes once again, there is no doubt that the character has made a lasting impression.
