Ghostface gives Drew Barrymore a phone call to promote a reunion of the Scream cast in anticipation of Scream (2022). Scream (2022) is the fifth film in the Scream franchise, starting with the original in 1996 that featured Barrymore in one of the most effective opening scenes in horror movie history. All four films were directed by horror icon Wes Craven, but due to his death in 2015, the new film will be helmed by Ready Or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

Scream follows the crimes of Ghostface, a masked killer who uses threatening phone calls and a voice changer to scare his victims before killing them with a knife. Scream (2022) will reunite cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette, who all appeared in the previous four films. They will be joined by new cast members Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, and Jack Quaid.

Scream tweeted (@ScreamMovies) a trailer showing Ghostface calling Barrymore on the set of her series The Drew Barrymore Show, asking her what her favorite scary movie is in homage to the original film. Ghostface then teases a reunion between cast members Campbell, Cox, and Arquette, along with Barrymore and surprise guests. The caption says that the daytime series will be celebrating Scream all week long in the lead-up to the release of Scream (2022)Check out the teaser below:

Initial reactions to Scream (2022) have been positive, with many citing the film's ability to continue the franchise's legacy. The film's red carpet premiere was canceled due to concerns about the omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus, as are many film premieres in recent weeks. Box office projections for the film are still high, however, with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday looking to boost theater attendance figures.

The original Scream was a landmark in the slasher genre, which was considered dead at the time of its release, with Scream showing that horror could be funny and self-aware as well as terrifying, with Barrymore's opening scene proving that thesis. The Scream franchise became known for crossing horror with comedy, which has led to many imitators and deconstructions of the genre like Freaky, Happy Death Day, and The Final Girls, showing that horror is a genre that can really appreciate and celebrate its history, which Scream (2022) is set to continue. With the film's release only days away, anticipation among horror fans is high, but with the right amount of nostalgia, gore, and humor, Scream is set to be a franchise continuation worth celebrating.
