The Scream TikTok just confirmed a connection to a character from the original film. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the fifth entry in the Scream franchise brings back original stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, with a number of new faces joining the franchise, including Marley Shelton, Jack Quaid, Jenna Ortega, Dylan Minnette, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding. Scream creator Kevin Williamson also serves as executive producer on the film, which is the first in the series to not be directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015.

Set 25 years after the first film, 2022's Scream finds Campbell's Sidney Prescott returning to Woodsboro in order to confront a new series of murders taking place in her old hometown, presumably under the guise of the Ghostface killer. Dewey and Gale Riley (Arquette and Cox) are back to help Sidney but, as usual, the killer and their motives are a mystery to be unraveled, with plenty of twists and turns to keep audiences guessing. Previous Scream sequels have constantly harkened back to characters or connections to characters from the original 1996 film and it seems like 2022's Scream will be doing the same.

A new video from the official Scream TikTok reveals a connection between two of the new characters and one of the characters from the original. Randy Meeks, as played by Jamie Kennedy, was a key character in the first film, who outlined the "rules" for surviving a scary movie. He survived the first film, but was killed in Scream 2. Two of the new characters in Scream 2022 just so happen to share the same last name as Meeks and the video reveals that they are the niece and nephew of Kennedy's Meeks. Mindy Meeks-Martin (Savoy Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Gooding) are two high-school kids featured in the new cast, but it's unclear how deep that connection goes... yet.

Randy Meeks was one of the more popular and likable characters from the original film and audiences were shocked at his death in Scream 2 as a result. Kennedy went on to many more film and TV projects after his exit from the franchise, but has constantly commented on the speculation that Randy could still be alive ever since. In a recent interview, the actor said that Randy could have faked his death and gone off the grid to live as either a good or bad guy, although his hopes are that it would be as a good guy.

While the franchise is quickly running out of original characters to tie back into the most recent film, there are definite possibilities in terms of reviving characters thought dead, with Randy being one of the most talked about. As the one character that seemed to have the best understanding of what was going on, it always felt premature that he would die so soon. The biggest problem with reviving him, however, is the fact that Scream 2 shows Randy very dead, covered in blood and with his throat slit. That said, it also doesn't show an ambulance or a funeral or anything to indicate any sense of finality to his death, which always felt odd and is a common thread that gets lost in most horror movies. If nothing else, this new family connection makes for fun speculation and helps create suspects, which is always key to the Scream franchise.
