Earlier this week it was rumored that Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham would join the cast of Scream 4. It was confirmed by the actress herself last night on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Graham will be playing Kate Kessler, the mother of Emma Roberts' character, Jill.
Graham will be joining franchise fresh meat newcomers Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), Lake Bell (Shrek Forever After), and Rory Culkin (Mean Creek). The Scream 4 cast is rounded out by returning stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox-Arquette.
Director Wes Craven has re-teamed with screenwriter Kevin Williamson (who wrote the first two Scream movies and an outline for the third) with the hope of making Scream 4 the first chapter in a new trilogy. This has lead to speculation that the returning cast members might be reaching their expiration dates in favor of focusing on the new (and much younger) cast.
While I REALLY hope they don't stick with the title on the promo poster, I'm not adverse to the idea of Scream 4 - if for no other reason than the fact that it can't possibly be as bad as the threequel.
I unabashedly love the original Scream - particularly for the still-incredible opening sequence. Of course the opening sequence became part of the formula for the sequels and was ripped-off/spoofed by so many other films that it's easy to forget just how powerful and effective it originally was.
In my opinion the big challenge facing Scream 4 is finding new ways to be scary and surprising to an audience that's savvy to its bag of tricks. For a franchise that relied so heavily on satire, the Scream movies themselves have been parodied so many times (the Scary Movie series for example) that it's going to take a lot of work to create anything as original or as resonant as the first film.
We'll see if they're up to the challenge when Scream 4 opens on April 15th, 2011.
What do you think of the Scream 4 cast so far? Are you excited for another entry or do you still need convincing?
