Franchise star Courteney Cox takes inspiration from the terrifying bangs she was forced to get for her role in Scream 3 for her Halloween outfit. Cox plays Gale Weathers in the long-running horror franchise, having starred in all four movies so far, and signing on to appear in the upcoming new entry, Scream 5. That film, directed by Ready or Not helmers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett is currently shooting, and Cox's return as Weathers has already been seen in set photos, along with an official post from the Scream Twitter account teasing the return of Ghostface.

Cox's Scream character, Weathers, starts off as a reporter in the first film, going on to become an author who writes about the killings from the first film. By Scream 4, Weather is married to Sheriff Dewey, played by Cox's former real-life husband David Arquette. Arquette, Cox, and Neve Campbell are the core trilogy of actors who have appeared in every movie in the franchise. In Scream 3, Weathers takes a central role in the plot, appearing in Hollywood, where the killer is murdering the stars of the film-within-a-film Stab 3. The one defining characteristic of the character in that movie, though, is her terrible haircut, featuring incredibly short bangs.

Now, Cox has referenced that terrible haircut in an Instagram post for Halloween. The photo shows Cox wearing a wig that makes it look like her short bangs have returned, and the perpetrator, holding scissors to her hair, is someone wearing the iconic Ghostface killer mask from the Scream franchise. Cox's caption is equally funny, exclaiming "Not the bangs!" You can see the post below:

Fans will be hoping that the photo is just a Halloween joke, because if Cox's Weathers returns to the terrible haircut she wore in Scream 3, arguably the worst of the four films in the franchise, it might be a sign that Scream 5 will be similarly terrible. That's unlikely, though, given the quality of Ready or Not, the last movie Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett directed. There are also other signs that the pair will pay tribute to the spirit of the original, given that Campbell, who was initially unwilling to return to play Sidney Prescott without the late Wes Craven directing, was convinced to sign on for Scream 5 by a letter that the directors wrote selling her on their vision for the film.

Little is known about the upcoming film, besides the cast, which includes The Boys star Jack Quaid, though with production underway, snippets of information are likely to drip out over the next few months. Scream 5 will be released in 2022, after first targeting a 2021 release date that was pushed out due to coronavirus, and audiences will then find out if it reaches the heights of the original, or is a dud like Scream 3.
