[Update: Check out a brief new clip from Scott Pilgrim!]
Universal Pictures has released the first TV spot for their colorful comic book flick Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which showcases more of the film’s quirky humor and visual style.
Directed by Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz fame, Scott Pilgrim tells the tale of its titular character (Michael Cera), an unemployed guitarist in his early 20s who falls for a mysterious girl named Ramona V. Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Things take a turn for the weird when Scott learns that in order to date Ramona he must first defeat her seven evil ex’s.
I say ex’s since – as you’ll see in the TV spot below – it turns out that Ramona’s romantic interests in the past have varied from a nerdy-looking Jason Schwartzman (Fantastic Mr. Fox) to a husky-voiced Chris Evans (Captain America) and the “bi-furious” Mae Whitman (Cera’s co-star from Arrested Development).
Onward to the clip:
Like the full-length trailer, this new Scott Pilgrim TV spot highlights the movie’s oddball humor, cartoonish touches, and campy nature (the sound effect graphics bring to mind the Adam West’s Batman of the 1960s). It’s all undeniably silly, but it looks inspired all the same, which should make the film entertaining rather than groan-inducingly stupid (see Frank Miller’s The Spirit – or rather, don’t).
Update: MTV is promoting their upcoming movie awards and as part of their promo campaign they’ve released a TV spot teaser for a clip from Scott Pilgrim. The full clip will debut – you guessed it – during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, which air this Sunday, June 6th @ 9pm on MTV.
For now sneak a peek at the clip – we’ll update it later when the full thing debuts:
Will Scott Pilgrim suffer from its PG-13 rating given that Wright’s two most popular comedies were both very much R-Rated fare? It doesn’t look like it based on the footage released so far. Plus, Wright has already demonstrated that his kind of humor need not be adults-only, most notably on the Simon Pegg-starring TV series, Spaced.
What do you think? Does Scott Pilgrim look entertainingly goofy? Are you a fan of campy comic book movies when they’re done right? Sound off in the comments section below.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World rocks its way into theaters in the U.S. on August 13th, 2010.
