Filmmaker James Gunn has pointed out the surprising crossover potential for Scooby-Doo and The Suicide Squad. Notably, Gunn has familiarity with both franchises, since he will be serving as the writer and director behind the upcoming sequel to the 2016 film Suicide Squad, and also previously wrote two live-action Scooby-Doo films that have since become classics.

As for Scooby-Doo as a whole, the cartoon is not unfamiliar with bold crossover events. The kids of Mystery Inc. have teamed up with several DC comics characters in the past, including Batman in The Brave and the Bold. The show has also featured many live-action actors and celebrity guests, always animating them in the classic 2D Scooby-Doo style.

Though past Scooby-Doo crossovers have seemed a bit unusual, a new crossover proposed by Gunn himself could see the Scooby Gang teaming up with their strangest allies yet: the band of DC villains known as the Suicide Squad. Earlier this week on Twitter, Gunn responded to a fan asking about the potential for a third live-action Scooby-Doo movie. Gunn apparently appreciated the request but acknowledged that though he had plans for a third film, it’s unlikely to be produced. In response, another fan suggested that Gunn could pursue a Scooby-Doo crossover with Guardians of the Galaxy, another project previously directed by Gunn. Gunn replied to say that a Guardians crossover could be difficult, but a Scooby-Doo crossover with The Suicide Squad is actually possible.

As Gunn points out in his tweet, the reason a Suicide Squad crossover is more likely than a Guardians on has to do with which companies own the rights to each franchise. Warner Bros. currently owns the rights to both Scooby-Doo and The Suicide Squad, which means it would be easier to combine the two properties with each other than with the Disney-owned Guardians. Gunn also specifies that if the crossover did happen, it would be animated, in keeping with the style of recent Scooby-Doo crossovers like the one featuring the cast of CW’s Supernatural.

Though it seems at first that these two properties would not fit together, a special featuring the Suicide Squad and Mystery Inc. could actually find a lot of success. Both stories feature casts of unlikely friends working together in unusual circumstances, and most importantly, both have been adapted by the same writer. We’ll have to wait until The Suicide Squad releases in theaters to see whether it gains the same following as Gunn’s Scooby-Doo films, but if the movie does well, it could be a sign that a crossover event is meant to be.
