The release of the new film Scoob! has introduced an entirely new generation of kids to the joys of the lovable Great Dane Scooby-Doo, arguably the best dog to have ever appeared on television. There’s a lot to love about this new film, particularly the way that it manages to stay at least somewhat true to these characters that so many people have known for so long.

At the same time, however, there are some things that the makers of the next film should consider improving if they want to give audiences more adventures with Scooby and the gang.

Love: The Allusions To Other Entries in the Franchise

Funland In Scoob

One of the things that the film does is to drop in little Easter eggs as rewards for those who’ve been watching Scooby-Doo for so many years. There are, for example, sly references to various voice actors who previously did the characters, as well as some of the other creatives involved in bringing Scooby to various screens over the years.

It’s a lovely little tribute, a reminder of just how venerable this franchise is and how many people have contributed to its success.

Could Be Improved: The Story

One thing that could be improved in the next installment, however, is the story. This film largely eschews the mystery-solving format that has always been the bread and butter of Scooby-Doo, instead opting to go in the direction of a blockbuster film narrative, with high stakes and a big bad.

While this isn’t entirely a bad thing, it would be nice to think that in the future they might consider going back to the basics in terms of the stories they want to tell.

Love: The Inclusion Of Classic Hanna-Barbera Characters

Scoob: The Yankee Doodle Pigeon Easter Egg in Dick Dastardly's Muttley Shrine

There’s something uniquely satisfying about seeing familiar characters brought to new life. That is certainly the case here. While the youngest viewers might not be familiar with characters like Dick Dastardly, those who have been long-time fans of the Hanna-Barbera universe will enjoy seeing him given a new lease on life.

Dick has a new character design and personality that, while similar to his earlier iterations, are also different enough to be exciting.

Could Be Improved: Too Much Setup

It’s no secret that Scoob! is designed to be the first in a new shared universe that will see several other films centering on various Hanna-Barbera characters. Again, this isn’t a bad thing in and of itself, and in fact, there’s a lot to look forward to in this shared universe.

Unfortunately, the fact that this is the first film in this new franchise means that it sometimes feels a bit too crowded as it tries to set up all of the films and characters to come in the future.

Love: The Voice Cast

Scoob! Movie Review

As all fans of animation know, the voices chosen to play the characters are key to a film's success. The producers of this film decided to go in some interesting directions when it came to finding voice talents.

While some might raise an eyebrow over the fact that some of the franchise’s stalwarts weren’t invited to reprise their characters, there’s no question that the people chosen added a new layer of richness to these well-established characters.

Could Be Improved: Too Cynical

Scoob

At first glance, it might seem a bit counterintuitive to say that any film starring Scooby-Doo could possibly be cynical, but there are many ways in which this film does seem to be a little too invested in its attempt to make money.

Scoob! is one of those films that seems like it was written by a committee trying to ensure they strike the perfect balance to make everyone happy. The result is a slick film, but there are times when it feels a bit too calculating to be truly enjoyable.

Love: The Animation

For most of its existence, the Scooby-Doo franchise has relied on traditional animation techniques, with just some minor changes to character design. Scoob!, however, decided to take things in a new direction, and the results are truly excellent.

There’s a new life to these characters that long-time fans of the franchise probably haven’t seen before, and while it might not be to everyone’s taste, it does help move Scooby and the gang into the future.

Could Be Improved: The Characters’ Designs

Mystery Inc In Scoob

On the flip side of that animation equation, there are some things about the character design in particular that could be tweaked. It’s all well and good to make changes in order to advance characters into a new generation of storytelling, but there are times in this film when one can’t help but wish that the creators stuck with the relative simplicity of the earlier designs.

Perhaps they’ll shift back slightly in that direction in future installments.

Love: Greek Mythology

One of the amazing things about Greek mythology is how ubiquitous it is in contemporary popular culture. That is certainly the case with this film, as one of the foes that Scooby and the gang have to face is none other than Cerberus, the three-headed dog that is the guardian of the underworld.

The character design of the beast is one of the best in the film, even if it is a little distracting to see a three-headed dog with Greek helmets.

One Of The Cerberus Skulls In Scoob

On the other hand, the folding of Greek mythology into the Scooby universe is also one of the things that the creators might consider not doing in future installments of the franchise.

While it’s cool to look at a dog like Cerberus, it has to be said that it feels more than a little random to have Scooby and the gang contending with an actual creature from Greek mythology.
