Google has come up with a clever way to celebrate Velma being revealed to have a crush on another girl in Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!. The Scooby-Doo franchise follows the exploits of four mystery-solving teenagers and their talking dog Scooby-Doo, including the intrepid Fred, the cowardly Shaggy, the fashion-plate Daphne, and the geeky Velma. Velma is known for her distinctive orange ensemble, frequently losing her glasses, and being the smartest member of the group. She was originally voiced by Nicole Jaffe, though the character has been portrayed by many actors over the years, including Linda Cardellini in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, Gina Rodriguez in Scoob!, and Mindy Kaling in the upcoming, gritty, animated reboot Velma.

The 34th direct-to-video Scooby-Doo movie, Trick or Treat Scooby Doo!, premiered on VOD October 4, ahead of its Cartoon Network premiere on October 14 and a DVD release on October 18. In this entry, Velma was voiced by Kate Micucci, who also plays the character on the series Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?. A clip has surfaced from the film showing the gang encountering crime boss and fashion designer Coco Diablo, and Velma shows her appreciation for the character's beauty, brains, and love of cats by fogging up her glasses and saying "jinkies." Fans have expressed their appreciation for this scene revealing that Velma is a part of the LGBTQ+ community, as the fan canon has often desired for the character to be a lesbian.

To celebrate this latest development for Velma's character, Google has included a special function when folks search Velma's name. Once the search page loads, a burst of confetti rains down from the top of the screen in the shape of the LGBTQ+ pride flag and the lesbian pride flag. Users can trigger the digital confetti further times by pressing a button at the bottom of the screen emblazoned with a party horn.

How Does Velma's Same-Gender Crush Affect Scooby-Doo Continuity?

Considering how many reboots, series, and films have created new visions for the Scooby-Doo characters, there is a question as to how long this character trait for Velma will stick, and in which properties. Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! does seem to be largely in the continuity of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, taking on its animation style and voice cast. While that animated series ended in 2021, it will likely continue in whatever Scooby-Doo films comes next.

There is also the fact that, while Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is the first property to make it official, Velma has long been intended to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Although over the years she has been depicted to be in relationships with men, including Supernatural's Sam Winchester, in 2020, longtime Scooby-Doo producer revealed that Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated's Velma was depicted as a lesbian, in ways subtle enough to be allowed at the time. With this precedent having been set over a decade ago, it seems the main branch of the franchise will likely continue developing this depiction of Velma over time.
