The upcoming animated Scooby-Doo film has found its Fred and Daphne in Zac Efron and Amanda Seyfried. After their cinematic debut in Raja Gosnell’s live-action film Scooby Doo back in 2002 and its sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in 2004, the Mystery Inc. gang is coming back to the big screen, this time in an animated film.
Warner Bros. has been hard at work developing a fully animated Scooby-Doo feature film, with Tony Cervone on board as director, and Chris Columbus, Pam Coats, and Allison Abbate attached as producers. The project already has half of its main voice cast, with Will Forte as Shaggy, Gina Rodriguez as Velma, and Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo. Now, the studio has found its missing pieces in Zac Efron and Amanda Seyfried.
According to Deadline, Efron and Seyfried have been cast as Fred and Daphne, completing the voice cast for the five main characters. Deadline also revealed the title of the film is, simply, Scoob. The story will follow the gang as they team up with other characters from the Hanna-Barbera universe (such as Captain Caveman, who will be voiced by Tracy Morgan) in order to save the world from the villainous Dick Dastardly.
Scooby-Doo was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears in 1969, and hasn’t stopped producing content since its creation. The original series, Scooby Doo, Where Are You!, aired for two seasons between 1969 and 1970 and went through a short revival in 1978. Since then, the Scooby-Doo franchise has produced various animated series, TV movies, comic books, and the aforementioned live-action films (as well as three direct-to-video/TV movies).
Efron is no stranger to kid-friendly content. Aside from starring in Disney’s High School Musical trilogy, Efron lent his voice to Ted in The Lorax, had a one-episode appearance in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and recently starred next to Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman. On a not so kid-friendly side, Efron’s latest credits include Baywatch, The Disaster Artist, and the upcoming Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.
Seyfried’s debut was in the acclaimed teen comedy Mean Girls and has explored various genres since, with films like Jennifer’s Body, Les Misérables, and First Reformed. She has also lent her voice to TV shows like American Dad! and Family Guy.
Efron and Seyfried are good fits for the roles of Fred and Daphne, as they both have the range to bring both seriousness and comedy. With Forte and Rodriguez also bringing their comedic touch, Scoob will surely bring a lot of the comedy that made the original series a success and a favorite among fans of all ages.
