A new decade dawns, and with it new sci-fi films. The genre that offers predictions of the future, explores new technologies, and visits new worlds will offer a bounty of films in 2020. Ranging from the comical and inventive to the action-packed and dystopic, we'll revisit several familiar franchises, such as Ghostbusters and Bill & Ted, as well as embark on adventures with new ones like Bloodshot.

The best part about sci-fi films are the questions they pose, and the innovative ways they try to answer those questions. For instance, what happens when a blue hedgehog comes to Earth and makes unlikely friends with a human, or what about when a group of teenagers find out they've been trapped underground for no other reason than they have special powers? The sci-fi films of 2020 will explore introspective concepts, like feeling alone in your universe, as well as finding your destiny, echoing the abjuration and the pursuit of validation we all can feel. So here's the 5 sci-fi films we're most looking forward to, and the 5 we're really not.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG

It's been a long time coming, but the film based on the popular Sega video game Sonic the Hedgehog is finally sprinting to theaters. While audiences were initially outraged at Sonic's CGI rendering in the first trailer, Paramount and Sega worked together to completely revamp Sonic's look based on fan's poor reactions.

James Marsden plays Tom Wachowski, a small town cop whose life gets turned upside down by the sudden appearance of a blue hedgehog whose ability to go super fast gives Speedy Gonzales and The Flash a run for their money. The evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is after Sonic, so the pair devise a plan to keep him away from government experimentation. It premiers Valentine's Day, 2020.

NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO: BLOODSHOT

Bloodshot Trailer Vin Diesel

Based on the Valiant Comics character of the same name, Bloodshot stars Vin Diesel as Ray Garrison, a fallen soldier who is brought back to life. His combat skills have been enhanced by superhuman strength, and he has the ability to regenerate at a ridiculous rate. He uses his new abilities to hunt down the man he thinks is responsible for murdering his wife.

The trailer makes it difficult to be excited about the film, considering it's a series of murky action scenes sutured together with Diesel's menacing voice over. The film seems to borrow elements from the Universal Soldier and Soldier, which doesn't exactly bode well. It debuts February 21, 2020.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: FREE GUY

ryan-reynolds-free-guy

For anyone thinking that Ryan Reynolds wouldn't be able to keep up his snarky comedic style with the Disney/Fox merger, fear not, for Free Guy appears to be a perfect blend of his distinct humor and a slightly more accessible tone than Deadpool.

He plays a bank teller who figures out that he's actually an NPC in the game "Free City," a cross between Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite. After a run-in with a player named Molotov Girl, he begins a wild adventure trying to progress in his own game while learning that the only thing that holds him back isn't the game itself, but the limitations he imposes on himself.

NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO: THE NEW MUTANTS

New Mutants Cast

With the first trailer for The New Mutants being released all the way back in 2017, fans have had time for their interest to wane. Based on the popular comic book series, it was originally supposed to be released in 2018, but reshoots pushed the film's release back.

At this point, any film delayed this much will either be incredible or complete garbage. In some ways the hype alone will crush it if it doesn't live up to fan expectations. As the 13th and final installment in the Fox X-Men series, fans who were burned on The Dark Phoenix may avoid this film altogether. It's supposedly being released on April 3rd, 2020.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: GHOSTBUSTERS

Ghostbusters 2020 trailer

After the divisive disaster that was the Ghostbusters reboot, there was something wrong in the neighborhood. Then rumors started circulating about the original cast returning for a new film, with Dan Aykroyd taking over as head writer from the late great Harold Ramis, and all was right with the fandom.

While nothing is known about the plot right now, Ghostbusters 2020 will see Bill Murray return as Dr. Peter Venkman, Ernie Hudson return as Dr. Winston Zeddmore, and Dan Aykroyd return as Dr. Raymond Stantz. Even Annie Potts is expected to return as Janine and Sigourney Weaver as Dana!

NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO: GODZILLA VS. KONG

So far the MonsterVerse hasn't known what to do with itself. Godzilla, released in 2014 was made for about $130 million and made over $500 million world wide, making it a monster-sized blockbuster success. Critics complained there wasn't enough of Godzilla though, so in 2019 Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released with much more of everyone's favorite destructive kaiju.

The sequel's budget was $170 million, and it made about $385 million world wide. Critics complained there was suddenly too much monster battles while also calling out the shoddy script and plot. It remains to be seen just what "balance" Godzilla vs. King Kong will strike.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC

The script was ready in 2010, but distributors were not. Flash forward ten years, and Keanu Reeves is hotter than ever with 3 John Wick films under his belt, making any studio crazy for not greenlighting another adventure with Theodore "Ted" Logan, William "Bill" S. Preston, Esq.!

In the lives of Bill and Ted, trouble isn't just afoot at the Circle-K. They've been trapped by mid-life, until a visitor from the future tells them they need to write a song that will save the universe. The original cast (including Death!) will need the help of the biggest names in the music industry, as well as throughout history, to accomplish their goal. Get ready dudes for time travel, hilarious cameos, and air-guitar.

NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO: CHAOS WALKING

Chaos Walking Tom Holland Daisy Ridley

We really wanted to be excited about this film. It's got Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, and Mads Mikkelsen! Unfortunately, the plot seems just too jumbled and the test screenings have been so poor that it's been attacked by reshoots. In fact, it's been continuously pushed back from its 2019 release date so much so that we may see it next year instead.

In the future, a pathogen has seemingly "killed" all women, leaving Todd Hewitt (Holland) stunned when he stumbles across one, Viola Eade (Ridley) outside his colony. The pathogen left something called "Noise", which gave the colonists the ability to read each others' minds as well as animals. When Todd is around Violet, everything is "silent", leading him to probe the mysteries surrounding the life he thinks he knows.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: DUNE

From Denis Villeneuve, the director of Blade Runner 2049, comes Dune, the first of a two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's famous sci-fi '60s novel. It was previously made into a film in the mid-'80s to great success, and we can only imagine how it will look now with improved visual effects and a stellar cast.

The all-star cast includes Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, the nobleman assigned to the planet Arakkis known for its precious "spice" trade, Timothee Chalamet as his son and heir Paul,  Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica his concubine, Josh Brolin as Paul's mentor Gurney Halleck, and Stellan Skarsgard as his sworn enemy Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO: MORBIUS

Many people thought Jared Leto was the wrong choice to play The Joker in Suicide Squad, but it seems he isn't done with comic book films. By the look of things, he's determined to prove to he can pull off a charismatic anti-hero. Jared Leto and his cheekbones seem like they were made for Marvel's Morbius, but fans may not give Leto a chance.

When renowned biochemist Michael Morbius (Leto) tries to cure himself of a blood disease, he inadvertently turns himself into a vampire instead. We're not sure that the all-star cast featuring Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and J. K. Simmons can save this underdog comic book film. Expect it to wing into theaters July, 2020.
