In confirming a Hollywood legend, Arnold Schwarzenegger is now taking credit for Sylvester Stallone's decision to star in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, a movie that was referred to by Stallone himself as "one of the worst films in the entire solar system, including alien productions we’ve never seen."
During the 1980s and 1990s, Schwarzenegger and Stallone were two of the leading action stars in Hollywood whose rivalry became what Stallone later referred to as a "violent hatred." The two have made numerous successful films, as well as a few box office bombs. One of Stallone's was Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, a 1992 buddy cop film that paired Stallone with Estelle Getty. The film currently has a 4 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was universally hated by critics.
Schwarzenegger recently appeared at Beyond Fest 2017 to celebrate the 30th anniversaries of Predator and The Running Man. During a Q&A session, Schwarzenegger talked in-depth about his feud with Stallone. According to Schwarzenegger, the two competed over everything, ranging from the box office success of their films, the size of their muscles, who had the least amount of body fat, to who had the biggest gun.
Schwarzenegger fondly recalled a time when the actor seized an opportunity to score a major win over his longtime rival. The actor confirmed a rumor that he was the reason why Stallone accepted the starring role in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. Schwarzenegger says that he actually read the script for the film first, and after recognizing how bad it really was, decided to use it to his advantage:
"So I went in – this was during our war – I said to myself, I'm going to leak out that I have tremendous interest. I know the way it works in Hollywood. I would then ask for a lot of money. So then they'd say, 'Let's go give it to Sly. Maybe we can get him for cheaper.' So they told Sly, 'Schwarzenegger's interested. Here's the press clippings. He's talked about that. If you want to grab that one away from him, that is available.' And he went for it! He totally went for it. A week later, I heard about it, 'Sly is signing now to do this movie.' And I said, [pumps fist] 'Yes!'"
In a visit to The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in 2014, Stallone admitted that he starred in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot and Rhinestone after being pressured by studio executives who told him that the roles would go to Schwarzenegger if he passed.
Though the two had a heated feud that lasted for several years, Stallone and Schwarzenegger have since put the past behind them and have become friends. The two worked together in The Expendables trilogy and co-starred in Escape Plan.
