How School Spirits Sets Up Season 2

Peyton List looking concerned in School Spirits episode 8

In the School Spirits season 1 finale, it's revealed that Maddie didn't die at all. Instead, her body is possessed by Janet. Viewers never see what Janet actually looks like, though the finale highlights that Janet is out in the world. Looking like Maddie and consciously removing Maddie's 'missing' posters when she sees them, it seems as if Janet is enjoying living in Maddie's body and doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon.

Although it's true that School Spirits season 1 answers several key questions, it's unclear how the Maddie-Janet switch happened and why Maddie doesn't even realize it. The show cleverly never takes a side on whether the lead character is dead, only that she believes she is and believes that she has to solve what happened to her. But, the graphic novel did offer a few hints along the way.

If Paramount+ does renew School Spirits, there's also the question of what's really going on with Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman). The show wrapped up its first installment with the sinister surprise that he's conducting experiments on the ghosts that have yet to cross over, but it's unclear why or even if he's as villainous as it's been suggested. As the producers have said, there is a lot more story to unravel.
