Schitt's Creek has been something of a sleeper hit. However, partially thanks to Netflix, the show is finally getting the recognition it deserves. This Canadian comedy about a wealthy family who lose everything and end up living in a small town has been running for five seasons. Over that time, we've seen the Roses transform from wealthy, self-centered socialites to dirt poor yet more considerate people.
Despite many people having just discovered the adventures of the Roses and the townspeople of Schitt's Creek; Dan Levy - the show's co-creator, writer, and star - has announced that the upcoming sixth season will be the last.
Although this news is upsetting, to say the least, Levy has proven to be a thoughtful and intelligent writer, so surely there is a perfect ending planned to give closure to the Rose family's journey. Here are ten things we need to see wrapped up before we say goodbye to the town of Schitt's Creek.
WILL "THE CROWS HAVE EYES III" STAY SHELVED?
Season 5 ended with something of a cliffhanger. After her original reticence to audition, Moira accepted a role in The Crows Have Eyes franchise, seeing it as an opportunity to revamp her acting career. Even when challenged with an apathetic director, Moira was able to turn the situation around. Such was her determination that this project would be a success, she'd planned her outfit (and wig, no doubt) for the premier and even announced that Alexis was to do her promotion in the run-up to the film's release.
However, the last season ended with Moira receiving news that the film was shelved. Moira was distraught and retreated back into her wardrobe. Will the final season see the release of The Crows Have Eyes III or will Moira have to come to terms with the fact her career is over?
WILL MOIRA CONTINUE TRYING TO REVAMP HER CAREER?
Furthermore, Moira, perhaps the most resistant to assimilation into the town of Schitt's Creek, will have to decide whether to continue to pursue her acting career, which will almost certainly take her away from the town, or whether to continue to fully embrace life in Schitt's Creek.
If Moira was to give up on performing and invest in the betterment of the town, this could be seen as the completion of the character's arc. Perhaps the success of her community production of Cabaret offers a middle-ground that embraces Moira's past and present. We'll have to wait and see.
CAN JOHN TURN THE MOTEL INTO A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS?
Since the family was relegated to the town they bought as a joke, patriarch John has been attempting to think of a business which could put him back on top. However, since the deed to the motel fell into receptionist Stevie's hand, John has been working tirelessly to turn the failing business around.
The final season will surely explore whether John can not only keep the motel afloat but turn it into a successful business. Perhaps expanding outside of the town with new franchises, not unlike his original video store business.
WILL ALEXIS & TED'S RELATIONSHIP SURVIVE THE Galápagos?
When we left them at the end of Season 5, Ted was heading to the Galápagos with Alexis about to join him. It was apparent from their conversations regarding the trip that they already had very different ideas of what was in store for them on their island adventure. Well, we're yet to see if Alexis will even make it to the Galápagos, let alone whether their relationship can survive the trip.
This period will test their commitment and it'll be interesting to see if they remain together, or if Alexis made it to the island when we catch back up with them in Season 6. It wouldn't be the first time Alexis abandoned Ted before a beachside holiday.
WILL ALEXIS PURSUE A CAREER IN PR?
Alexis has matured by leaps and bounds since arriving in Schitt's Creek, even getting her high school diploma and beginning a carer in PR. Her campaign to promote the town's production of Cabaret was a big success and her mother, who often overlooks Alexis, has even offered her daughter a job.
It will most likely depend on what's gone on in the Galápagos, but will Alexis finally strike out on her own?
WHAT WILL DAVID & PATRICK'S WEDDING LOOK LIKE?
No scene was more of a tear-jerker than Patrick's proposal to David. Their relationship has been an incredibly heartwarming and progressive exploration of modern love and has taught David about self-sacrifice and compromise, two things he has not been particularly adept at until recently.
Unless something terrible happens, it would be pretty surprising that we didn't get to see their wedding during the upcoming season. With David's impeccable sense of style, we can't wait to see what their wedding is going to be like.
WILL STEVIE GET OUT FROM BEHIND THE DESK?
Just before she went on as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Stevie confessed to Moira that while everyone around her was growing up and living their lives, she was stuck behind the reception desk at the motel. We got a glimpse of Stevie beginning to realize her own value during her stunning rendition of "Maybe This Time," and it would make sense if she continued down this road in the final season.
Only time will tell if Stevie will truly commit to pursuing a life away from the motel.
WILL ROSE APOTHECARY CONTINUE TO THRIVE DESPITE NEVER SEEMING TO HAVE CUSTOMERS?
One of the less believable aspects of the show is the continued success of David and Patrick's business, Rose Apothecary, especially considering there's hardly ever an actual customer in the store.
David going into business for himself has been a big part of his development, so it'll be intriguing to see whether Rose Apothecary continues to flourish or not. If it will continue to thrive, to grow, or if David will face some tough trials in the future.
WILL THE FAMILY STAY IN SCHITT'S CREEK?
Ever since the Rose family found itself dumped in Schitt's Creek, they've all attempted to find a way out. However, over the course of five seasons, they've all become ingrained in the life of the town.
They've come to enjoy the company of the townspeople, have set up businesses, and develop romantic relationships. When the show comes to an end, it will be interesting to see if they chose to remain in the town or finally get out.
WILL THE FAMILY STAY TOGETHER?
Lastly, one of the biggest arcs of the show has been the development of the family's dynamic. They've evolved from somewhat estranged to a close-knit unit. They've struggled and survived hardship together and have grown to value the connections they have with their family members.
Whether or not the family stays together remains one of the biggest questions the show has yet to answer. It wouldn't be surprising if the finale of the show saw each member of the Rose family grappling with this decision. Whatever happens in this final season, it's sure to be hilarious, heartwarming, and true to the nature of Schitt's Creek.
