The popular Schitt's Creek, a sleepy little start of a comedy that became a huge sensation, is one of the most binge-worthy shows around. Throughout its run, it was nominated for 178 awards and won 65 thanks to its brilliant ensemble cast and crew.
Although the show ran for 6 seasons, season 1 is arguably the best. Viewers get to meet the Rose family and the townies, get acquainted with their quirks and watch the connections they make. Some of the show's best things happened all of the way back in season 1, but keep the audience wanting more.
The Town Sign
Upon his arrival to the town he bought, Johnny Rose takes a tour. He eventually makes it to the town welcome sign which makes him stop in his tracks. The sign depicts two people at the edge of Schitt's Creek, but the couple seems to be in a compromising position.
Johnny notices it right away, but no one else in the town has seemed to be phased by it. To make matters worse, the town motto "Where everyone fits in" is proudly on display. The townies try to allay Johnny's fears by letting him know that the supposed couple are actually brother and sister. They post a smaller sign to make this clear for everyone. The sign stands as the first thing in a long line of differing perspectives between the Rose family and the townies throughout the seasons.
Alexis' Middle Name
When the time comes for Alexis to fulfill her community service, Moira fills out the form that she needs to get signed to show proof of her attendance. Well, she fills out most of the form that is. She has left Alexis' middle name blank, and Alexis calls her out on this for possibly not knowing it.
Moira and Johnny start to list middle names that they think must be the ones they gave Alexis - Emma, Anna, Hannah, or Elsbeth. Unfortunately, none of these are right. David chimes in that he didn't know Alexis had a middle name and wonders if he one has as well. Moira starts to question if they are terrible parents. Later in the season, the audience finally learns that Alexis' actual middle name is Claire but the signs that the Rose parents are not really "hands on" continue throughout the series.
A Ray Of All Trades
If anyone knows the heartbeat of Schitt's Creek, it's Ray Butani. Viewers quickly learn that Ray is the only real estate agent in town. As a realtor, Ray shows Johnny the lay of the land, including the town sign. Johnny also gets his help to try to re-sell the town, but Ray is not very optimistic, as the government did not give it much value when seizing the family assets.
The audience learns that Ray wears many hats. Throughout the show, Ray also works as a photographer, travel agent, Christmas tree salesman, and town council member. He's a bit greedy and insulting at times, but where else could the townies go for his services? It's the start of a great running gag.
Herb Ertlinger Winery
Johnny is constantly looking for any kind of business, to get the family back on their feet. He gets some interest from a local winery, so he and Moira head to Herb Ertlinger Winery. Once there, they actually find out that Herb wants Moira to be a spokesperson and shoot some commercials.
Herb Ertlinger Winery is a fruit winery, with descriptions of "musk melon oak Chardonnay" and "dazzling peach crabapple Riesling Rioja." Moira detests the wine but sees it as the only possible chance for a comeback. She dons her best wig and high fashion ensemble, but when her camera time comes, she just cannot get it right. One of the funniest scenes in the whole show; it ages like a fine wine.
David Goes To The Vet
When David realizes he has not slept since moving to Schitt's Creek, he goes to the internet to make a diagnosis. He narrows it down to a heart attack or pulmonary embolism and tries to rouse Stevie to take him to the emergency room. When he learns that there's no hospital in town, his condition worsens.
Stevie advises that there is a doctor in town, so she takes him to see Dr. Ted, the handsome local veteran. After an examination, Dr. Ted advises that he is going to be fine because he was having a panic attack. David laughs off the diagnosis, saying it is not real but rather an excuse celebrities and agents use. David's anxiety is apparent throughout the series, along with a case of hypochondria, so this early look at it is intriguing.
Turkey Neck
After David is scared of a bug in the hotel room, Stevie dares him into going on Roland's annual turkey shoot. David reluctantly agrees, not wanting to be outdone by Stevie. Dressed as only David could be, he appears at the turkey shoot, and the group goes on the hunt.
When David gets his chance, he takes a shot but gets the turkey in the neck instead of the head. Now the group has to sit and wait until the turkey dies, much more slowly than a shot to the head would have taken. Of course, Stevie rubs it in that she knew about how David was all along and David no longer feels the need to prove himself to Stevie.
Allez-Vous Deja Vu
When an unknown package arrives at the motel, Moira is excited to learn it is an old friend trying to help their financial situation. Moira and David are surprised to find Allez-Vous products, a makeup and beauty products pyramid scheme. Rather than look a gift horse in the mouth, Moira hatches a plan.
Moira and David invite all of the townies over for a luncheon, pretending to not have had the time to put all of their favorite products away. David, heavily bronzed, not-so-convincingly tries to nonchalantly convey the products' benefits to the group. When they look for someone to help sell the products, they discover that Allez-Vous had already made its way through the town. Just another wrench in the Rose money-making plan that lasts throughout the series.
Meeting The Girls
In season 1, fans are first introduced to Moira's favorite girls, her wigs. As important as Moira's outfits are to her sense of fashion, her wigs are the perfect completion of her ensemble. She would never leave home without them.
Right from the beginning, viewers learn that Moira's wigs not only have names but also have their own personalities. When she is packing up her personal belongings during the raid, she barks they can't pack Krista and Robin together because they don't like each other. Later, she wears Maureen, a Cruella homage who does not like to be manhandled, to the Schitt Hawaiian party. Moira's wigs only get more and more outlandish over time.
Red Vs. White
After David and Stevie sleep together, Stevie is confused because she assumed David was gay. She is not sure where things stand between them but does not really know how to come out and ask. David senses her nervousness and tries to explain things with an analogy.
Although she thought they both liked red wines, David explains that he actually likes both red and white wines. He's even been known to like red wines that used to be white and white wines that used to be red. And there was the one time he even tried a rose. He likes the wine, not the label. It's quite a tender moment in an often over-the-top comedy.
Moira-isms
One of the best parts of the whole series, not just in season 1, is the things that Moira says. No matter how outlandish, it appears that others are not taken aback by her manner of speaking. Whether it is through comment, question, compliment, or ridicule, Moira certainly has her own way of expressing herself.
She may be relating that she could "kill for a good coma right now." She could be telling David to "stop acting like a disgruntled pelican" or that she cannot spend time with him because she is "positively bedeviled with meetings." Words are her calling card throughout the show; her precious "bebe."
