How did the Rose family lose all of their money in Schitt's Creek? After the wealthy family lost their fortune, they were forced to move to a small podunk town. The Canadian sitcom starring Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Dan Levy, and Annie Murphy, is set to air its sixth and final season in 2020.
Before relocating to Schitt's Creek, Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) was the CEO of Rose Video, the nation’s second-largest chain of video rental stores. He was a tycoon in the industry and his business endeavors greatly paid off for his family. His wife, Moira (O'Hara), worked in the popular soap opera, Sunrise Bay. Moira might not be the sole breadwinner in the Rose family but her social status was just as effective for the family's notoriety.
Johnny and Moira's kids, David and Alexis (Dan Levy and Murphy), grew up without a worry in the world due to their parent's wealth. They got accustomed to their lavish lifestyle well into their adult lives. Johnny was always business savvy and he clearly made the right decisions in his early life, that was until he hired a questionable business manager. The Rose Video empire crumbled after the business manager defrauded the family, causing them to lose their fortune.
Not only did the Roses lose their money, but they also lost their livelihood. The business manager never paid their taxes and disappeared, leaving a team of government officials to raid the Rose mansion. They were allowed to keep a small handful of personal items. Moira notably grabbed a bunch of her designer outfits and her luxurious wig collection. The government also allowed the Roses to keep one asset: the ownership of a town called Schitt's Creek.
Johnny spontaneously purchased the town for his son as a joke gift in 1991. The family patriarch completely forgot about the town but it turned out to be their saving grace. The family of four was forced to move into conjoining rooms within the local motel. Initially, the Roses found the town revolting and they couldn't wait until they could sell Schitt's Creek to get back to their old lifestyles. As time went on, each member of the family realized that moving to Schitt's Creek wasn't the worst that could have happened.
Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis held on to pieces of their old lives but they miraculously adapted to life in a small town. Johnny found a new business opportunity as the co-owner as the refurbished Rosebud Motel whereas Moira became a prominent figure in the community. David opened up a brick and mortar store, Rose Apothecary, with his business partner, and soon to be husband, Patrick (Noah Reid). Alexis found love in Ted (Dustin Milligan) and also started a public relations business after going back to school. Losing their wealth might have been devastating at first, but the Rose family made the best out of a bad situation. It will be interesting to see if the Roses stick around with their small-town endeavors for the long-term when Schitt's Creek ends.
