Schitt’s Creek is one of those shows that really knows what to do with its characters. From the moment that they appear in the first season, they leave an impression on the viewer. While each of them goes through their own journey during the course of the show’s run, it can’t be denied that Alexis shows the most growth and development. She goes from being selfish and vain to being a young woman of remarkable maturity and depth, and in the process, she becomes much more likable.

Along the way, she manages to do some things that are very annoying, as well as some that are very sweet, indeed.

Annoying: Broke Up With Ted For Mutt

Mutt and Alexis talk while doing community service

One of the first conflicts that Alexis finds herself in revolves around her feelings for the hot veterinarian (Ted) and Mutt, the man she does community service with. Despite getting engaged to Ted, she ultimately leaves him for Mutt, before leaving Mutt in turn. This is an early sign that Alexis has some real issues with commitment, and it’s hard not to feel very annoyed and frustrated with her that she so carelessly plays with the feelings of other people.

Sweetest: Broke Up With Ted For His Own Good

At first, it seemed as if Ted and Alexis were going to be one of two final couples (the other being David and Patrick). Alas, things didn’t turn out that way, since the two of them felt that they were on increasingly divergent paths, with each one following their professional destinies. Ultimately, it was Alexis who pulled the plug, acknowledging that, while they would always love one another, they just weren’t meant to be. It was one of the saddest and sweetest moments in the entire show.

Annoying: Forgot David’s Birthday

Alexis And David In Schitts Creek

While it’s clear that Alexis loves her family, in particular her brother David, it has to be said that she’s not always the best when it comes to remembering important events. After all, who could forget the moment when she forgot David’s birthday? Coming from anyone else, this might not be a big deal, but given how close they are to one another, it’s hard not to feel very annoyed with her that she could be so careless with her brother’s feelings.

Sweetest: Helped Her Mother’s Career

Alexis and Moira in the cafe

The relationship between Alexis and her mother is, to put it mildly, difficult. Moira loves her daughter deeply and dearly, but that doesn’t keep her from sometimes saying very cruel things. Small wonder that Alexis gets mean in return. However, when it becomes clear that her mother needs her to help her career, she jumps right in to help her, in the process jumpstarting her own formidable career in PR. It’s a testament to her growth as a character, and as a person.

Annoying: Ignored David’s Text When He Ran Away

David runs away in Schitt's Creek and joins the Amish

As the first season ended, David ran away from his family, and ends up briefly staying with an Amish family. Unbeknownst to the rest of the family, it seems that David was texting Alexis the whole time. This being Alexis, however, she clearly ignored them.

At this early stage in their relationship, she was clearly still leaning into the more annoying and selfish side of her personality, regardless of how much anguish it was causing everyone around her.

Sweetest: Wouldn’t Take Twyla’s Money

Alexis And Twyla In Schitts Creek

If there’s one thing that Alexis seems to really like, it’s money. After all, she takes the family’s fall from grace particularly hard. However, one of the ways that she grows the most throughout the show is her realization that money isn’t all that matters. In fact, she even refuses to take Twyla’s money, even when it’s clear that she, having won the lottery, can more than afford to be generous. It’s one of Alexis’ finest, and sweetest, moments as a character.

Annoying: How Much She Resisted Letting Go Of Her Old Friends

Like the rest of her family, Alexis had quite a lot of friends in New York City, though most of them were pretty shallow and awful, more interesting in being cruel to each other than in being supportive. This being the case, it’s rather frustrating and annoying, that at first Alexis resisted letting go of them, despite the fact that even she could see how toxic that they were. It’s truly a shame that she didn’t figure this out sooner, considering that they didn’t make a secret of it.

Sweetest: When She Recognized How Much Her Family Meant To Her

Schitts Creek Rose Family

At first, Alexis has a difficult time connecting to her family. This isn’t particularly surprising, since they have all been very distant from each other, both physically and emotionally, for quite some time. Slowly but surely, they all realize how much they mean to one another, and this realization hits Alexis particularly hard, especially since it occurs to her only once the family is beginning to part ways to start their own adventures.

It’s a beautiful, poignant, and emotionally satisfying moment for her change as a character.

Annoying: Her Dress For David’s Wedding

Leave it to Alexis to choose David’s wedding day to be inappropriate and selfish just one last time. And, of course, leave it to her to choose the wedding dress as the means by which she would do so. Given how much she’s grown as a character, it’s especially annoying to see her wear a dress that would make everyone assume that she was the one that was getting married rather than her brother - even if she thought it was just a nice dress for a black-and-white wedding, and felt terrible when she realized. Truly, Alexis is one of a kind and one of the show's funniest characters.

Sweetest: Encourages Ted To Study In The Galapagos

Ted surprises Alexis from the Galapagos Islands in Schitt's Creek Season 6

The will they or won’t they of Ted and Alexis is one of the story’s most endearing storylines and one of the show's most successful relationships (in its own weird way), and it’s quite wonderful when they finally get together. Unfortunately, their bliss proves to be short-lived when Ted reveals that he’s been accepted to be part of a research team in the Galapagos. One has to give Alexis credit, though, for finally being willing to put someone’s needs above her own when she tells him that he should definitely take advantage of this opportunity.
