Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to feature the next appearance of Elizabeth Olsen as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Scarlet Witch – a character who Olsen really enjoys playing. Olsen made her MCU debut as the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff, during the post-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier before eventually joining the Avengers team in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Further appearances in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame solidified Olsen’s Scarlet Witch as a fan favorite before she helmed her own TV series, Wandavision.

Ahead of her appearance in Doctor Strange 2, Wandavision reveals Wanda's response to the fallout from Endgame. Aside from losing friendly comrades like Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Wanda also loses Vision (Paul Bettany), a synthezoid whom she loves. Following such devastation, Wanda uses her Chaos Magic to take over Westview, New Jersey during the events of Wandavision. Wanda creates her perfect universe by resurrecting Vision and even brings twin sons of her own into existence. However, Wanda’s perfect life is short-lived when she realizes the harm she has caused the citizens of Westview and sacrifices her family to undo the damage she has done.

With Doctor Strange 2’s release less than a month away, Olsen talked about why she loves playing the Scarlet Witch during the Doctor Strange 2 press tour (via The Direct). See Olsen’s statement below:

“It’s not the most fun, in my mind, to always play the hero of a story when they do no wrong. I don’t find that interesting. I think the reason why I really enjoyed Wanda from the beginning is that she’s very clear in her beliefs. They just don’t align with others, and that’s okay. She’ll have her own realizations and admit when she makes mistakes.”

WandaVision Episode 8 Wanda Using Magic

Wanda is a perfect example of the MCU’s standard hero: even though she’s one of the 'good guys,’ she’s not perfect. Wanda has suffered great losses throughout her time in the MCU, and the pain of those losses has driven her to make some questionable decisions, such as her takeover of Westview. Olsen’s love of playing the character aligns with why Wanda is a compelling character to watch: she makes mistakes and has her own ambitions like any other person. The difference, of course, is that Wanda has the power to make those ambitions a reality in an instant.

Ever since the announcement that the Scarlet Witch would join Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) at the forefront of Doctor Strange 2, it has been unclear whether she’ll be an ally or an enemy to Doctor Strange. Historically, Wanda has been more of a hero, but Wandavision brought her into contact with the Darkhold – a book that Wanda has been studying to learn about dark magic. With such power at her disposal, Wanda could be tempted to turn on Strange in order to look for her lost children in the Multiverse. Or, perhaps studying dark magic has corrupted the part of Wanda that’s more heroic. With these questions and more lingering, answers are not far out of reach as Olsen will return as the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
