Warning! Spoilers for Darkhold Alpha ahead!

The Silver Surfer is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe; very few heroes can last against him, let alone fight him to a stand-still—except for the Scarlet Witch. In Darkhold Alpha, on sale now in print and digital, readers learn that Scarlet Witch’s Hex Magic is more than a match for the Surfer’s Power Cosmic.

The Silver Surfer did not begin life as a herald of Galactus; he was originally Norrin Radd, of the planet Zenn-La. When Galactus arrived to feed on the planet, Radd offered himself as a herald in exchange for sparing Zenn-La. Imbued with the Power Cosmic, the Surfer traveled the cosmos, looking for worlds for his master to consume. The Power Cosmic flows from Galactus, making it one of the most powerful sources of energy in the Marvel Universe. With it, the Surfer is capable of traveling at speeds well beyond the speed of light, able to cross great distances in seconds. The Silver Surfer can also fire energy blasts and has god-like stamina and strength. The Power Cosmic has allowed the Surfer victories over the likes of Doctor Doom and the King in Black. While it may seem the Surfer is unstoppable, it's just been revealed the Scarlet Witch can go toe-to-toe with him, and potentially even defeat him.

In Darkhold Alpha, written by Steve Orlando, with art by Cian Tormey, colors by Jesus Aburtov and letters by Clayton Cowles, the Darkhold, an ancient book of evil spells, has returned to Earth, thanks to the machinations of Doctor Doom. Scarlet Witch is alerted to the book’s return, leading to a confrontation with Doom. Before she gets to Doom, however, she must fight Victorious, Doom’s herald and “wife,” who also wields the Power Cosmic. The two fight, and Scarlet Witch quickly gets the upper hand. Victorious is shocked, claiming Scarlet Witch should not be able to “quell” the Power Cosmic.

Scarlet Witch stands triumphant over Victorious

Since her first appearance in 1964’s X-Men #4, the Scarlet Witch has been portrayed as one of Marvel’s most powerful characters. There are numerous instances where fans have gotten to see how powerful she really is, such as House of M, where she de-powered a significant number of Earth’s mutants. In Darkhold Alpha, the Scarlet Witch overpowers a wielder of the Power Cosmic and does it without breaking a sweat. Would the Scarlet Witch have similar luck with the Silver Surfer? Victorious does not yet have the experience with the Power the Surfer does, so it is possible that a more seasoned user could possibly defeat the Scarlet Witch.

There seems to be no end to how truly powerful she is—meaning she could find the power to end the Surfer once and for all. Furthermore, how might she fare against Galactus himself? After a few years on the sidelines, the Scarlet Witch has returned, more powerful than ever, capable of taking down cosmic powered beings like the Silver Surfer.
