Spoilers ahead for Dark Ages #1!

In Avengers: Infinity War, Scarlet Witch, moments after watching Thanos kill the Vision, fell victim to the “Snap,” disappearing into nothingness and now Dark Ages #1 recreates this gruesome fate. The first issue is on sale now in print and digital.

Avengers: Infinity War was the first part of the conclusion of the “Infinity Saga” that had been running through the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanos, in pursuit of collecting the Infinity Stones, takes the Mind Stone, which had been implanted into the Vision; he does this in front of Scarlet Witch, who had begun to develop feelings for Vision. Once Thanos had the Mind Stone, he was able to complete the Infinity Gauntlet and harness the Stone’s powers to slaughter half the universe’s population, all in the name of balance. This event came to be known as “the Snap,” and Scarlet Witch was one of its victims. Mere minutes after watching her lover brutally murdered by Thanos, she too would fall victim to the Mad Titan. It was gut-wrenching scene, and Dark Ages #1 recreates it with a twist. The book is written by Tom Taylor, with art by Iban Coello, colors by Brain Reber, and letters by Joe Sabino.

The Un-Maker, an ancient, cosmic being that has been imprisoned for countless eons under the Earth has been set free, and the heroes of Earth must band together to stop it. The Scarlet Witch and Vision engaged the Un-Maker, with Wanda using her reality-altering powers to fight him. The Un-Maker is more than a match for Scarlet Witch, continually undoing everything she throws at him. Finally, the Un-Maker unmakes Scarlet Witch, and she vanishes into air, while the Vision watches in horror.

Vision watches Scarlet Witch disappear

This brief scene flips the script on Scarlet Witch and Vision’s Infinity War deaths. While the Scarlet Witch again vanishes into nothingness, the Vision is still very much alive, and can only watch as she disappears. Her death angers Vision and he attacks the Un-Maker, but his efforts amount to little, and the Un-Maker continues his assault on Earth. Vision’s sacrifice meant nothing in the end, adding another brutal layer. Dark Ages is a bleak read, and this scene stands out among the rest. It is not only a shout-out to the original, it adds to it as well. The scene emphasizes that no one is safe in Dark Ages, and good heroes are going to die horrible deaths.

Scarlet Witch and Vision’s death in Avengers: Infinity War was one of the movie’s most memorable moments, and Dark Ages #1 gives it a shout-out.
