A classic Marvel Comics Avenger could explain Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Vision insult. Despite his importance to Scarlet Witch’s MCU story, Vision had no role in the movie and was only mentioned a few times. Given the nature of the plot, it would have made perfect sense for him to be involved, regardless of the fact that he died in Avengers: Infinity War.

Due in large part to his role in WandaVision, the fallen Avenger cast a long shadow on Doctor Strange 2. Throughout the movie, Wanda Maximoff was on a mission to relocate to a universe where she could live happily with her children. Nothing was said about whether or not she expected Vision to be there. In WandaVision, Vision was the father of Billy and Tommy and someone who has long been seen as the love of her life in the MCU. The grief she felt from losing Vision was the driving force of the show and arguably the biggest factor that led to her creating Westview in the first place. That was what made it so surprising that Scarlet Witch talked only of being with her kids and not of the life she wanted to build with another universe’s Vision.

In keeping with this storyline’s avoidance of Vision, Doctor Strange 2’s exploration of Earth-838 sidestepped the character as well. Scarlet Witch did find a world where her children lived, so presumably, Vision could have made a cameo appearance and could have even participated in the final battle when America Chavez forced a confrontation between the two versions of Wanda. But oddly enough, none of these things happened. In light of everything that occurred in WandaVision, Doctor Strange 2’s decision to ignore him is a big problem – unless, of course, his exclusion is more complicated than it seems. Here’s why Scarlet Witch’s children may have a different father on Earth-838 and the other realities in the MCU’s multiverse.

Scarlet Witch’s Love Triangle In Marvel Comics

Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man kiss in Marvel Comics.

In Avengers and West Coast Avengers comics, Scarlet Witch was part of a complex love triangle that involved two of her teammates, Vision and Wonder Man. Powered by ionic energy, Wonder Man a.k.a. Simon Williams was a character who developed ties to the group before either hero joined the team. He sacrificed himself in his first appearance and remained “dead” for several years. When he came back to life and joined a new team of Avengers in the 1970s, he met Scarlet Witch and Vision, who were already married by this time. At this point, it had been discovered that Ultron had created Vision using a copy of Simon’s brain patterns.

As a result of their unusual connection, some characters shared this idea that Wonder Man and Vision were essentially the same person, yet only one was the real thing; the other was an android copy. This caused conflict between the two Avengers, especially since both were in love with Wanda. Vision felt that because he was just a synthezoid, Wonder Man could take her from him if he tried. Meanwhile, Simon felt that Vision ended up with the life that should have been his simply because he had the good luck of meeting Wanda first. He was convinced that she was capable of developing romantic feelings for him if Vision wasn’t around. And many years later, when Vision and Scarlet Witch’s relationship dissolved, his beliefs were proven correct.

Vision Having Children Is Impossible

One of the things that caused Vision great turmoil in the comics is the fact that he can’t have children. After all, he is a synthezoid, so having a normal, human family is not the kind of life he could ever have. Her knowledge of that is why Scarlet Witch unconsciously created Billy and Tommy with her Chaos Magic. As for Vision’s MCU counterpart, the same reality would of course apply, except the ideal family life was denied to them for a different reason – Thanos killed Vision in Infinity War. But even if that tragedy hadn’t happened, the couple never would have been able to have children, which raises questions about how Billy and Tommy were conceived on Earth-838. Not only that, but Scarlet Witch claimed they were alive in other universes as well. What’s not clear, though, is how.

The Vision rejects being Wonder Man in Marvel Comics.

In the MCU’s version of Vision’s origin, there isn’t an obvious place for Simon Williams, but it is possible that Marvel has plans to retcon him into the latter’s backstory. It was recently learned that Wonder Man fits into Marvel’s plans for the future. Apparently, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is developing a Wonder Man MCU TV show, which means that Simon likely already exists somewhere on Earth. If so, there’s a chance that Simon has a secret link to Vision. In addition to using J.A.R.V.I.S., the Mind Stone, and a vibranium body, there’s a chance that Ultron needed a human’s brain patterns to complete his android creation offscreen in Avengers: Age of Ultron. If that’s the case, Vision and Wonder Man could have their comic link intact in the MCU.

Billy and Tommy’s Father Could Be Wonder Man

If the MCU’s Vision is an android copy of Wonder Man, then it would stand to reason that she, like the character from the comic books, is capable of falling in love with Simon Williams. In the West Coast Avengers comics, she only had eyes for Vision, but Wonder Man believed that things would have turned out differently for him if he had entered her life before Vision. It may be that in the MCU’s other universes, that’s exactly what happened. In places such as Earth-838, Wonder Man may have served with the Avengers alongside Scarlet Witch. If Wanda Maximoff encountered the flesh-and-blood person that Vision was created from, Wanda could have enjoyed the happy life that she was never able to experience on Earth-616.

Wonder Man being the unseen father of Billy and Tommy and the husband of Scarlet Witch would clear up quite a lot in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It would have been too confusing for audiences if Simon – a seemingly random character – was suddenly revealed to be their father, so that would explain why he wasn’t shown. Plus, he’d provide an adequate explanation for why Earth-838’s Wanda has children and why they look like the magically-created twins from her fantasy world with Vision. And, Wonder Man is the one Marvel character Wanda could be with that wouldn’t hurt Scarlet Witch and Vision’s MCU love story. The idea that he – a person who is considered to be the “real” Vision in many ways – is the only other person Scarlet Witch can love in any universe reinforces the beauty and significance of their relationship.
