WandaVision creator and head writer Jac Schaeffer teases Scarlet Witch’s internal conflict leading into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. After the highly successful run of Disney+’s first original MCU series, fans are eagerly awaiting the next appearance of Scarlet Witch. Once a character relegated to the sidelines, WandaVision saw Wanda Maximoff take on a central role as she dealt with the traumatic death of Vision and the end of the world as she knew it. This all culminated in Wanda taking the town of Westview, New Jersey, hostage and creating a new life for her, Vision, and their twins, Billy and Tommy.

At the conclusion of WandaVision, Maximoff is able to fully embrace her newfound powers and become the Scarlet Witch, studying the Darkhold she got from Agatha Harkness. When fans last saw her, Wanda hears the calls of her twins, Billy and Tommy, despite the fact that they had seemingly disappeared along with the Hex in "The Series Finale." It most certainly seems like part of Wanda's journey in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see her searching for her children, but Schaeffer hints that this presents a moral dilemma for her.

Schaeffer tells the Empire Film Podcast that Wanda has been led to a place of acceptance by the end of WandaVision, one where she will be able to learn about her newfound abilities and discover her status as one of the most powerful beings in the MCU. With that discovery, though, comes hard choices, and Schaeffer says that normal concerns "about what's right and wrong" could drift away because of Wanda's position.

"From where I'm sitting, the intention was to land Wanda in this place of acceptance, but also with this enormous amount of new power, and we all know the saying 'With great power...' And so I also think her exchange with Agatha gives her so much confidence, she so fully steps into herself that the enormity of her power, in my mind, starts to make some normal human concerns about what's right and wrong drift away because she is this being that is so, so different."

Scarlet Witch uses her powers in WandaVision.

Fans have speculated as to what role Wanda will take on in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Schaeffer's comments certainly seem to hint at how the film could play out. Some expect Wanda to become a full-on villain in the sequel, going head-to-head with the Sorcerer Supreme. That doesn't seem to be the case, though. It sounds like Wanda may go searching for her children somewhere in the Multiverse, leading to a break with reality that affects the entire world.

This will most certainly put Wanda and Doctor Strange at odds with each other with Billy and Tommy at the center. Strange might take it upon himself to stop Wanda from messing with the Multiverse, but, as seen in WandaVision, it takes a lot for Wanda to be stopped and it's clear that she may not be too concerned with collateral damage when it comes to her family. This all sets Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness up for one huge confrontation. Wanda may be the most powerful sorceress, but whether or not she's a match for the Sorcerer Supreme remains to be seen.
