Spoilers for Heroes Reborn #7 ahead!

The Scarlet Witch has endured much in the Marvel Universe, but in the world of Heroes Reborn, she died in a twisted, horrible fashion, and it was all thanks to the Green Goblin. As the event has unfolded, it has become clear this new world is a dark mirror of the regular Marvel Universe, and in Heroes Reborn #7, readers learn the Scarlet Witch was a casualty.

The Squadron Supreme, a team of Justice League pastiches, are Earth’s premiere superhero team in Heroes Reborn, and the Avengers never existed. Even in this alternate reality, the Green Goblin is one of the most twisted villains, taking on a Joker-esque quality—the perfect foil for Nighthawk, a dark riff on Batman. Slowly, more people are starting to remember the world before it changed, and the Avengers are returning to set things right. This has set the Squadron Supreme into panic mode, and they set out to find answers to just who the Avengers really are—a path that takes them straight to the Green Goblin.

In Heroes Reborn #7 from  Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, Dean White, and Cory Petit, the Goblin is being held at Ravenscroft Asylum (Marvel’s version of Arkham Asylum) and two of the Squadron: Power Princess and the Whizzer, are interrogating the Goblin, trying to pry out anything he might know. The Goblin immediately begins trying to turn the tables on them, but Power Princess realizes what he is doing, and stops him. She mentions the Silver Witch (the Heroes Reborn version of the Scarlet Witch) and how Goblin killed her. Readers then learn he killed the Silver Witch without laying a single finger on her—at night, he would whisper to her through the air shafts, committing full-on psychological warfare by slowly eating away at her sanity. The Witch’s Hex powers were kept in check by a dampener, and one night during a jailbreak they failed and she committed suicide by blasting herself with her own Hex blasts. Readers do not learn much more, but the Goblin paints a gruesome picture of the Silver Witch’s end---and then laughs about it.

Silver Witch, Green Goblin

The Scarlet Witch has had a rough life. Her marriage to the Vision dissolved, as did the two children she had with him. In House of M, and under great mental stress, she rewrote reality and depowered a significant number of mutants. All of this seems to pale in comparison to her fate in Heroes Reborn: locked away in a psychiatric hospital, deprived of her powers, and left at the mercy of the Green Goblin, who is even more chilling a foe here. The Goblin took advantage of her fragile mental state and goaded her into taking her own life. The Scarlet (or Silver) Witch has found no peace in the regular timeline and she was deprived of it here as well.

Heroes Reborn has been a dark journey into an alternate Marvel Universe, where the Scarlet Witch met a twisted end.
