Scarlet Witch raises her arm with the Avengers floating in Avengers Disassembled comic.

Warning: contains spoilers for Black Cat #9

If Marvel Comics' infamous sorceress Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch ever happens to resurface from death, Wanda may want to steer clear of her teammates The Avengers. In the years following Marvel Comics 2005 crossover event House of M, Earth's Mightiest Heroes have seemed to devise a foolproof containment facility capable of holding the powerful superheroine at bay if deemed necessary.

There are few superheroes within the Marvel Universe on par with the strength and god-like power of the Scarlet Witch. A natural sorceress, Wanda was once believed to be an omega-level mutant capable of devastating reality-warping abilities. After years of serving with The Avengers, Maximoff's abilities were finally showcased to their complete potential in writer Brian Michael Bendis (Daredevil, Ultimate Spider-Man) and artist Olivier Coipel (Thor, Avengers)'s eight-issue House of M series. Wanda's actions in House of M not only changed the lives pertaining to several familiar superheroes and villains but left an abundance of Earth's mutant population powerless and without any hope for the future.

Even today, it seems that neither The Avengers nor the X-Men has not forgotten about the Scarlet Witch's temporary psychic takeover of the Marvel Universe. In Jed MacKay (Taskmaster, Man Without Fear) and C.F. Villa (Uncanny X-Men, Lockjaw)'s Black Cat #8 & 9, the titular cat thief is tasked with infiltrating a top-secret stasis coffin in the care of S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury Jr. Fury had been on the hunt for additional reality-warping foes Quantum and Hector Bautista a.k.a. Overtime within New York City, before Black Cat forcefully retrieves Captain Marvel villain Ripley Ryan a.k.a. Star within her well-incubated coffin prison without much chance of an escape.  The super spy had gone to some extreme lengths to keep Star contained, even tripping the docks' safehouse shipping container with booby traps and coded electronic devices. Fury's frantic search for individuals with reality-warping abilities combined with his prophetic warning of Star's danger seems to hint that Nick's insurance policy stems from the destruction generated by the original, Wanda Maximoff.

Star Stasis Coffin Marvel Comics

Beginning her life as an average human, Ripley had been genetically enhanced by Kree scientist Dr. Minerva before being strengthened even further with the infamous reality Infinity Stone. Following her rivalry with Carol Danvers, Star redirected her reality-warping abilities to torture her old high school bullies throughout the streets of New York City, which brought the villain into contact with Spider-Man. While Star had yet to reach the heights of Scarlet Witch's famous House of M days, it's easy to forget that Wanda initially debuted in comics with merely hex bolts and energy manipulation, with only hints of chaos magic.

There is no telling what end Black Cat's villainous employer Doctor Doom has for Ryan but the Latverian dictator seems to be impressed enough that he values her potential even more than fellow villains Quntaum and Overtime. It may only take a few months or even weeks of training for Star to become The Avengers' next Scarlet Witch... or worse.
