What happened to Scarlet Witch’s accent between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War? Elizabeth Olsen’s Avengers character Scarlet Witch (AKA Wanda Maximoff) was first introduced to the MCU in Avengers: Age Of Ultron alongside her twin brother Pietro (AKA Quicksilver). The HYDRA-enhanced Maximoff twins were initially aligned with the bad guys and hellbent on exacting revenge on Tony Stark for their parent's deaths, but by the end of the movie they decided to fight the good fight and teamed up with the Avengers to take down the sentient Ultron.

As the Maximoff twins hail from the fictional Eastern European nation of Sokovia, Scarlet Witch’s Age Of Ultron accent was distinctly Slavic. According to Elizabeth Olsen, she and Quicksilver co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson worked hard to disguise their natural American and British accents in the movie. Part of that involved working closely with dialect coach Sarah Shepherd with whom the actors researched a range of different Eastern European accents to create and perfect their Sokovian twang.

The Scarlet Witch actress kept up with her Sokovian accent in Captain America: Civil War which saw Wanda officially join the Avengers under the tutelage of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, who was training the recruit to be a spy. Yet by the time Avengers: Infinity War was released just a couple of years later, it seemed her original Sokovian drawl had been dropped in favor of a more American twang. So, what happened to Scarlet Witch’s accent between those two MCU movies?

Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch in a still from Captain America: Civil War

The Russo Brothers, who directed both Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, have explained why Scarlet Witch adopted a different accent. In an interview on the Sad Happy Confused podcast, the fraternal directing duo revealed they never intended for Wanda’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron accent to be permanent and that having Elizabeth Olsen switch to a more American-sounding voice was, in fact, intentional. Apparently, it was supposed to reflect the fact Scarlet Witch underwent spy training during Civil War and part of that involved adopting a different accent to make herself less identifiable.

Scarlet Witch’s newly adopted American accent looks like it will be a permanent fixture in the MCU. Elizabeth Olsen is set to reprise her Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch role in the forthcoming miniseries WandaVision, in which she sports a distinctly American accent. She’s also confirmed as a cast member of the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel that’s set for a 2022 release.
