Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, like any other Pokémon games, introduced a variety of new Pokémon for trainers to catch - though the rarest non-cosmetic form is likely not a Pokémon that many fans would predict. In addition to new species, there are a couple of regional forms that can be found in Paldea, which is much less than the amount found in Alola, Galar, and Hisui. One of these new regional forms has a secret rarity, however.

A new mechanic that has appeared in recent games is that of rare cosmetic forms that don't provide any gameplay benefits, but are difficult for completionists to get a hold of. The odds may change, but there is generally a 1% encounter slot for Sinistea’s Antique Form, which is much rarer than its Phony Form. Similar encounters to this were made for other cosmetic forms in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, occurring during evolutions this time. These evolutions that troll Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players are Dunsparce’s evolution Dudunsparce and Maushold, the evolution of the new Pokémon Tandemaus. These forms are simply cosmetic and see no changes in base stats or typing. One Pokémon makes an exception to that rule, however.

Tauros' Version-Exclusive Regional Forms Are Scarlet & Violet's Rarest Pokémon

Different Paldean Tauros Forms in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Tauros receives not one, not two, but three regional forms in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. All three of these forms are Fighting-type, with the common Combat Breed Tauros having this as its one type. Meanwhile, the two rarer breeds have additional secondary types. The Scarlet-exclusive Blaze Breed Tauros is unsurprisingly a Fire-type Pokémon, and the Water-type Aqua Breed Tauros is exclusive to Pokémon Violet. Not only are these regional forms version exclusives in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but they also don’t look too different from Combat Breed Tauros, and are found alongside them, further confusing players. Due to their tangible gameplay differences, the different breeds also feel more like genuine rare species rather than cosmetic gimmicks.

Tauros' Regional Forms Hide In Plain Sight In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Paldean Tauros in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

These version-exclusive Tauros breeds have a 1/25 chance of appearing in a Tauros herd. However, players may not notice when these rare Pokémon have spawned because of their very similar designs to the more common variety. Although the odds are lower than the 1% odds of getting a Three-Segment Dudunsparce or Family of Three Maushold when evolving them, the fact that they’re hidden in plain sight makes catching them all the more frustrating. It's this camouflaging that makes them one of the rarest wild encounters in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

There is, however, one way to rig the system to make these rare Tauros variants more easily obtainable. Similarly to obtaining Shinies in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, sandwich recipes are the key. By using recipes to make either Fire or Water-type Pokémon more common depending on the version, players can increase the chance that rare breeds of Paldean Tauros will appear by quite a lot. Even then, it’s still one of the more difficult Pokémon to obtain in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Blaze Breed and Aqua Breed Tauros are definitely some of Gen 9’s rarest new Pokémon, and hopefully, sandwiches can make them less annoying to find in the wild.
