Over a decade after he was last seen in the horror series, Cary Elwes has addressed his potential Saw franchise return. Elwes starred in the original Saw movie as Dr. Lawrence Gordon, the oncologist who diagnosed John Kramer's terminal cancer and was thrown into Jigsaw's game for his apathetic personality and infidelity towards his wife. Having cut his foot off to escape, Gordon's fate was left unknown until 2010's Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, in which he was revealed to have survived and recruited to be a Jigsaw apprentice.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant to discuss the sports biopic Sweetwater, Cary Elwes opened up about his potential Saw franchise return. The original movie's actor shared a fairly neutral response to the idea of reprising his role as former Jigsaw victim-turned-apprentice Dr. Lawrence Gordon, congratulating the filmmakers behind the franchise on its continued success, but confirming he has no current involvement. See what Elwes said below:

I have no comment one way or the other about that franchise, I really can't speak to it. I'm happy for for the filmmakers that they continue to make money, and that it seems to be a financial bonus for them, I really can't speak to it, because I'm not really involved anymore.

Why Lawrence Should Return To The Saw Franchise

Though the sequels after creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell no longer had involvement were dominated by the torture of its various traps and lackluster characters, many franchise fans agree that the reveal of Elwes' Lawrence being a Jigsaw apprentice in Saw: The Final Chapter was one of the better twists since the original film. Considering how quickly this reveal was sped through in the 2010 film's conclusion, many have similarly expressed their hopes for it to be further explored now that the franchise is back up and running.

With Jigsaw introducing the concept of the first apprentice to Tobin Bell's eponymous games master, it would be a missed opportunity to not further explore the dynamic between Elwes' Lawrence and Matt Passmore's Logan Nelson. The upcoming Saw X not only sees the return of Final Chapter director Kevin Greutert, but is also set to feature both Bell and another iconic Jigsaw apprentice, Shawnee Smith's Amanda Young, though it's currently unclear if this would be a flashback, as was the case for Bell's return in every Saw movie after the 2006 threequel, and when in the timeline it may take place.

While his comments above may sound a bit uninterested in making such a reprisal, he has previously confirmed an openness to doing so, despite feeling his character's story was explored "as far as it can go."
