A new trailer for Saw 9 arrives tomorrow as revealed in mysterious spiral images posted by Samuel L. Jackson and other cast members. James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s original Saw was a game-changer when it arrived on the scene in 2003. Indeed the film was so pivotal that, according to Freddie Prinze Jr., it made slasher revival films of the time look like comedies by comparison.

So successful was Saw that it indeed launched an entire franchise, which would continue all the way until 2017’s Jigsaw. However, even highly profitable horror franchises eventually come to feel stale and dated, and such seemed to be the case with the later movies in the Saw series. But there is still some fuel left in the Saw franchise after all as it’s about to be rebooted with Chris Rock in the lead role and Saw II, III and IV director Darren Lynn Bousman back at the helm. Entitled Spiral: From the Book of Saw, the new movie is now set for release a week earlier than its originally announced date, and there’s been great anticipation for a new trailer to arrive in the near future given how close that release date now is.

Indeed it's been revealed that the long-anticipated new Saw 9 trailer is set to arrive tomorrow. The first hint something was afoot came when Jackson posted a cryptic tweet featuring his face twisted into a spiral with the simple word “tomorrow.” Other members of the cast including Rock posted their own spiral face tweets, and Marisol Nichols went so far as to flat out confirm her tweet was teasing the arrival of a trailer. See the tweets in the space below:

Like many a film originally set to arrive in 2020, Spiral saw its release date pushed back due to COVID. Due to the postponement of the film’s release, very little has been revealed about it, beyond one now-year-old teaser trailer and some character details that were teased in interviews with director Bousman. Obviously the approach with this film is to keep things as veiled in secrecy as possible, which makes sense given the enigmatic nature of the Saw movies themselves. That cryptic approach indeed extended all the way down to the trailer reveal tweets posted today.

It remains to be seen what will be included in the new Spiral: From the Book of Saw trailer set to arrive tomorrow, but it’s safe to say there’s a high level of anticipation for this newest entry in the long-running gorefest franchise. It will indeed be fascinating to see how Rock, Bousman and company reinvent Saw for 2021. It’s actually amazing to realize that it’s been almost 20 years since the original Saw unleashed its particular brand of torture-porn carnage on the world, introducing the iconic horror villain Jigsaw in the process. The landscape is of course very different now than it was in 2003 when the first Saw came out, with supernatural jump-scare horror having supplanted torture-porn for the most part. But hopefully Saw 9 will find the right formula to update the franchise for a new era while still retaining the key elements that made the older Saw movies such massive hits.
