A new trailer for Spiral: From the Book of Saw gives a horrifying tease at the new terrors lurking in the Saw franchise’s ninth film. Starring Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson and Max Minghella, Spiral tells a brand-new, independent story in the world of Saw. Darren Lynn Bousman returns to direct – his first Saw film since Saw IV – and the story is written by Jigsaw’s Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. Spiral: From the Book of Saw is scheduled for release on May 14.
After the original Saw released in 2004 to immense financial success and intense popularity among horror movie fans, the franchise quickly became one of the biggest names in the genre. New films released annually until Saw 3D in 2010, which was intended to be the series’ final chapter. Those plans changed in 2017 when an eight film, Jigsaw, returned to the world of Saw. Since its inception, the franchise has become infamous for increasingly grotesque body horror – a signature that has made it somewhat divisive.
Spiral will be the ninth film set in the world of Saw, and while it’s been positioned as a relatively independent story, it looks like it will have the same gore and grotesque scenarios the franchise is known for. All those horrors are on (partially obscured) display in the film’s new trailer, which shows Chris Rock’s Detective Zeke Banks on the track of a gruesome killer. Watch the new Spiral trailer below.
Once again, someone seems to be impersonating the dead Jigsaw Killer, leaving a trail of bodies in their wake. From the gruesome, disfiguring traps to the rusty handsaws, Spiral looks like it certainly has all its bases covered as an entry in the Saw franchise. It should be interesting to see if and how the new story ties into the original Saw movies, and why the new killer has decided to create scenarios so reminiscent of the original Jigsaw Killer.
Hopefully, Spiral: From the Book of Saw can deliver a compelling horror story as well as a gory one. The first Saw was praised by many as a fresh and original take on the genre, but later entries were often ridiculed for relying on cheap scares and shock value to cover lackluster writing. Of course, that didn’t stop them from making huge hauls at the box office. 2017’s Jigsaw holds a 33 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but it also grossed over $100 million worldwide on a budget of just $10 million. It remains to be seen what kind of mark Spiral: From the Book of Saw will make on the Saw franchise and the horror genre when it releases on May 14.
