Another star has lent their voice to the #SaveDaredevil movement, with Clark Gregg tweeting his support in saving Netflix's Daredevil. The #SaveDaredevil movement has been alive since the show's cancellation in 2018, but the movement has begun trending again on Twitter and other social media after a coordinated campaign. After the rights reverted back to Marvel from Netflix, fans of the show hoped to get Marvel's attention as they start rolling out MCU shows on Disney+.
Daredevil ran on Netflix for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. The show, like Netflix's other Marvel shows, took on a darker tone in an effort to court a more mature audience. Starring Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Vincent D'Onofrio, Daredevil received critical acclaim for most of its run. Along with Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, the Netflix shows eventually came together to form The Defenders. Despite the shows earning a passionate fanbase, Netflix eventually canceled all their Marvel series as Disney+ began working on their own lineup of MCU programs.
Now Gregg, who plays S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson in the MCU, has tweeted his support for saving Daredevil. The actor retweeted an older message from D'Onofrio highlighting Stan Lee and Daredevil. Gregg's tweet included the hashtag #SaveDaredevil, which began trending on Twitter last weekend. Marvel has yet to comment on the movement.
Gregg himself knows a thing or two about social media campaigns: the actor was at the center of the #CoulsonLives movement to save his character on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. after his death in the first Avengers. Even though Marvel hasn't spoken about the campaign, Gregg is just one of many MCU stars that have lent their support and helped the movement gain traction. Dawson recently encouraged the movement, as did the Daredevil himself Cox earlier this year. With all the stars voicing their support, Marvel has surely taken notice.
One of the biggest questions surrounding #SaveDaredevil is how Marvel would bring back the show if the movement succeeds. Netflix's show had a darker tone, one that would most likely not fit in with the universe they are building on Disney+. It's possible they could simply bring Cox back as Daredevil as a sort of test run to gauge fan and audience reaction. They could have him appear in other shows at a lower cost by just paying Cox's salary instead of funding an entire show. If the move was successful, they could potentially bring back the show as they figure out how to integrate more mature content into their platforms. Whatever Marvel decides to do, fans will be watching closely.
