Warning: Contains spoilers for Savage Avengers #7!A long-standing feud between Doctor Doom and Ultron is about to be resolved–with a twist! In Savage Avengers #7, the team travels forward to the year 2099, finding it under the rule of Ultron. As the Savage Avengers fight for their survival in this hellish landscape, their salvation may come from a most unlikely source: the 2099 version of Doctor Doom.

In 1992 Marvel unveiled the 2099 family of titles, starting with Spider-Man 2099. Set in the dystopian future of 2099, these books featured new versions of familiar Marvel characters, such as the aforementioned Spider-Man, Punisher, the X-Men and Doctor Doom. In Doom 2099, the ruler of Latveria was somehow teleported to 2099 and found his homeland was ruled by an oppressive, hyper-capitalist regime, and Doom took it upon himself to end their reign. Doom 2099 ran for 44 issues, and ultimately saw Doctor Doom conquer America. The 2099 line faded into obscurity by decade’s end, but Spider-Man 2099 would return in the 2010s as part of the Spider-Verse. Now, other 2099 characters are receiving their due in Savage Avengers. After landing in the year 2099, the team learns the world has come under Ultron’s domination. Meeting Jake Gallows, the Punisher of 2099, the Savage Avengers learned that Ultron controls an army of Deathloks, making him more fearsome than ever.

In Savage Avengers #7, the team stages a raid on Hellrock, one of Ultron’s bases. Used as a labor camp for dissidents, Hellrock is heavily guarded but the Savage Avengers, including Cloak, Dagger, Anti-Venom, Daredevil and Punisher 2099, fight their way through armies of rogue Deathloks as well as a new and terrifying version of MODOK. After the Avengers are able to overpower Ultron’s goons, readers then learn the true objective of the mission: to retrieve Doom 2099! Dagger finds the monarch, chained up in a chamber deep in the ground. She asks if he would like to join the Avengers, to which Doom replies: “If that means exactly my revenge upon Ultron, dear lady, then I’d follow you through the gates of Hell.” The book is written by David Pepose, illustrated by Carlos Magno, colored by Espen Grundetjern and lettered by Travis Lanham.

Ultron Just Sealed His Fate Against Doom

Doom 2099 Dagger Savage Avengers

The issue ends there, leaving readers waiting until next month to see the sure-to-be epic throwdown between Doom 2099 and Ultron. When Doom came to the year 2099, he found his beloved Latveria subjugated by outside forces. Unwilling to let it stand, Doctor Doom marshaled his powers into liberating Latveria; his visions of conquest grew out of a desire to impose order on what he thought was a chaotic world. Doom achieved this goal–and now Ultron has jeopardized everything Doom has wanted and worked for. Ultron has humiliated Doom as well, chaining him up and imprisoning him deep underground; Doom will not let this stand either, and his revenge upon Ultron is sure to be brutal.

Of course, with Doom being Doom, it is entirely possible that once the menace of Ultron is vanquished, he will turn on the Savage Avengers. It is also possible that during the fight, Doom will follow his own whims and desires rather than what the team wants, which could give Ultron a huge advantage over the Savage Avengers and Doctor Doom. However, Ultron has made this fight a personal one for Doctor Doom, which does not bode well for Ultron.
