Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg's Sausage Party to Screen at SXSW 2016

Prepare yourself for a storm of hashtags and tweets, SXSW is just around the corner. The annual Austin bacchanal of movies, music, technology, and games draws thousands of visitors from around the world into the heart of Texas for ten days of raucous parties and wild entertainment. While much of the world’s focus remains on music, the SXSW film festival has grown in stature in recent years to become one of the world’s hottest stops on the festival circuit, serving as a starting point for many an up and coming career.

Of course, the increase in visibility means that the festival is no longer focused solely on the unknown. While SXSW is still known for cultivating a wildly diverse and groundbreaking lineup of independent films, Hollywood has taken notice and has begun sending big name movies to both premiere and preview. Last year, for instance, attendees got the chance to see Ex Machina and Get Hard weeks before they hit theaters. Often times, the festival will also host Work in Progress screenings, giving audiences a chance to witness a work before it’s fully completed and ready for mass consumption. These can be among the most entertaining and informative events of the entire festival and this year has a meaty treat for attendees.

In a late game announcement, SXSW has revealed a Work in Progress screening of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s (This Is the End) animated comedy, Sausage Party. Despite being animated, SXSW has described the film as being “as raucous and hilarious as you’d expect.”

Judging from the description, Sausage Party sounds like it might just be a stellar existential comedy. The film is said to follow the adventures of a sausage as he embarks on a journey to discover the truth of his existence. Given the old saying about not wanting to know how the sausage is made, this might be the kind of comedy you can really sink your teeth into. With a cast that reads like a who’s who of modern comedy - including the likes of Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Kristen Wiig (Zoolander 2), Nick Kroll (The League) and Jonah Hill (Hail, Caesar!) - Sausage Party might become one of the must see movies of the entire festival.

Even without this surprise announcement, Rogen and Goldberg stand to have a great showing at this year’s SXSW. The premiere of their long awaited pilot for AMC’s Preacher is already earning strong buzz for the festival’s Episodic category, giving them yet another must see for attendees. Rogen, of course, is no stranger to SXSW, having appeared at the for the premiere of Neighbors (which was also a Work in Progress screening) and Observe and Report in the past. As previous festival attendees can attest, Rogen knows how to work a SXSW crowd so, if nothing else, his appearances should be entertaining.

Though the eyes of the world might be on Preacher, Sausage Party could be another hit for the comedic duo. It’s quirky premise fits well for the festival, who’ve long capitalized off the old mantra “Keep Austin Weird.” It certainly seems like a good fit for both the city and SXSW. While the premise might be too absurd for some audiences, Rogen and Goldberg are masters of modern comedy and, heady or no, Sausage Party could easily become a modern comedy masterpiece. We’ll have more information on both Sausage Party and SXSW as the festival kicks off.

SXSW FIlm begins on Friday, March 11 in Austin, Texas, and runs through March 19. Sausage Party’s Work in Progress screening is on Monday, March 14 at 9:15 pm at the historic Paramount Theater. The film will begin its regular theatrical release on August 12th, 2016.
