Here's every Marvel Cinematic Universe star who's hosted Saturday Night Live so far, including Shang-Chi's Simu Liu. As has become evident on the occasions that Saturday Night Live has allowed non-actors like Elon Musk to host, hosting an episode is far from an easy job. Excelling at sketch comedy requires a very unique skill set, as one-season cast member Robert Downey Jr. found out in the 1980s. To date, Downey is the only leading MCU star to actually be an SNL cast member, and as he admits, it didn't go well.

As with any other group of performers, some of the MCU stars who've hosted Saturday Night Live have excelled, and others have faltered, although thankfully none tend to be included in "worst host ever" conversations. Since Saturday Night Live has been on the air much longer than the MCU has existed, many of these instances understandably occurred before the actor in question became known for their big screen work with Marvel.

In evidence of just how powerful in pop culture that the MCU has become though, there have been several hosts who were rocketed up to the level of SNL after their Marvel roles greatly increased their profiles in Hollywood, including Thor actor Chris Hemsworth. This would of course include Simu Liu, who while not an unknown before Shang-Chi, is now a full-fledged A-lister. It's too soon to say who will join the MCU SNL hosts club next, but here's all the people who have to date.

Michael Keaton (First Hosted October 30, 1982)

Michael Keaton, who terrorized Peter Parker as The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, has hosted Saturday Night Live three times. Keaton first hosted on October 30, 1982, then returned on November 14, 1992, and again after his career resurgence on April 4, 2015. Keaton is set to play Batman again in DC's The Flash movie.

Jeff Bridges (First Hosted February 26, 1983)

Beloved actor Jeff Bridges has only appeared in one MCU movie, but his role was a major one, playing villain Obadiah Stane in Iron Man—the movie that kicked off the entire MCU. Bridges first hosted Saturday Night Live in 1983, co-hosting alongside his brother Beau. His next time hosting wouldn't come until December 18, 2010.

Glenn Close (First Hosted February 25, 1989)

Robert Downey Jr. (First Hosted November 16, 1996)

Tony Stark with his arms spread in Iron Man

As brief as Robert Downey Jr.'s run as a Saturday Night Live cast member was, he did return in 1996 to host. That said, he hasn't been back since, not even after playing Iron Man/Tony Stark in the MCU shot his career back up into the stratosphere. Perhaps he just doesn't feel comfortable doing sketch comedy.

Samuel L. Jackson (First Hosted January 10, 1998)

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in Avengers

Samuel L. Jackson was already a Hollywood icon prior to joining the MCU as Nick Fury, but leading SHIELD has certainly only increased his star power. Surprisingly for a star of his caliber, Jackson has only hosted Saturday Night Live once, on January 10, 1998. He has since appeared in one-off sketches though.

Gwyneth Paltrow (First Hosted February 6, 1999)

Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts

Gwyneth Paltrow, who's played Tony Stark's true love Pepper Potts in multiple MCU movies, has hosted Saturday Night Live three times. However, only one of those came after her MCU debut. Paltrow first hosted in 1999, then returned on November 10, 2001, and came for thirds on January 15, 2011.

Scarlett Johansson (First Hosted January 14, 2006)

John C. Reilly (First Hosted October 21, 2006)

John C Reilly and Peter Serafinowicz in Guardians Of The Galaxy

John C. Reilly, who played Rhomann Dey, a member of the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy, has only hosted Saturday Night Live once. That occasion came on October 21, 2006 shortly after the release of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Considering Reilly's knack for broad comedy, it's a bit surprising he's never been back.

Josh Brolin (First Hosted October 18, 2008)

To MCU watchers, Josh Brolin will forever be known as The Mad Titan, Thanos, who briefly succeeded in wiping out half the universe with the snap of his fingers. Brolin has hosted Saturday Night Live twice, first on October 18, 2008. The actor returned to host again on April 14, 2012.

Bradley Cooper (First Hosted February 7, 2009)

Bradley Cooper may be associated with having dashing good looks, but in the MCU, it's his voice that does the work as Rocket Raccoon, a character with a tragic backstory. Cooper has shown himself adept at drama, comedy, and even music, but he's surprisingly only hosted SNL once, on February 7, 2009.

Jeremy Renner (First Hosted November 17, 2012)

Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye is about to star in his own self-titled MCU TV show on Disney+, after having played the character in multiple movies since his quiet debut in Thor. Renner has only hosted Saturday Night Live once, on November 17, 2012. Fittingly, this came only a few months after starring in the first Avengers movie.

Edward Norton (First Hosted October 26, 2013)

The Incredible Hulk Edward Norton

Edward Norton may have only played Bruce Banner/The Hulk in one movie, but he still made an impression on the MCU. Norton has also only hosted SNL once, on October 26, 2013. With the MCU now firmly entering the multiverse, maybe Norton's Hulk will one day return.

Chris Pratt (First Hosted September 27, 2014)

It was playing Star-Lord/Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy that took Chris Pratt to the A-list, and fittingly, it also propelled him to SNL host. Pratt hosted SNL on September 27, 2014, only a few months after Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters. Pratt returns to the MCU in 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Chris Hemsworth (First Hosted March 7, 2015)

One assumes he proved popular with the cast.

Kumail Nanjiani (First Hosted October 14, 2017)

Sam Rockwell (First Hosted January 13, 2018)

Justin Hammer speaks at court

Sam Rockwell played the sleazy weapons-maker Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2. It's a role many wish he would have returned to at least once, but with Tony Stark gone, that ship has likely sailed. Rockwell hosted Saturday Night Live on January 13, 2018.

Sterling K. Brown (First Hosted March 10, 2018)

Don Cheadle (First Hosted February 16, 2019)

Considering Don Cheadle's long and distinguished career, it's surprising that it took him so long to host Saturday Night Live for the first time. Cheadle made his hosting debut on February 16, 2019. He'll return to the MCU soon, to star in Disney+'s Armor Wars TV show.

Idris Elba (First Hosted March 9, 2019)

Harington hosted Saturday Night Live not long after Elba, on April 6, 2019. Considering Eternals' post-credits scene - which also saw the vocal debut of Mahershala Ali's MCU version of Blade - it's clear Harington's MCU journey is just beginning.

David Harbour (First Hosted October 12, 2019)

David Harbour is of course best known for playing Jim Hopper on Stranger Things, and made his MCU debut as Red Guardian in 2021's Black Widow, the first MCU movie to release in two years thanks to Coronavirus delays. Harbour hosted Saturday Night Live on October 12, 2019. Considering his continued popularity, a second hosting gig wouldn't be a shock.

Owen Wilson (First Hosted October 2, 2021)

Mobius sitting in Ravonna's office in Loki

Owen Wilson made a big splash in his MCU debut, quickly becoming a fan-favorite as friendly TVA agent Mobius on Disney+'s Loki show. Considering his long career as a comic actor, the fact that Wilson didn't make his SNL hosting debut until October 2, 2021 is another eyebrow-raiser. He'll presumably return for Loki season 2.

Jonathan Majors (First Hosted November 13, 2021)
