The premiere of Saturday Night Live season 44 is quickly approaching and Adam Driver has been announced to be hosting the first episode. Over the years, SNL has had a number of celebrity hosts and musical guests to make each episode of the show funny and unique. SNL has been on the air since 1975, spanning an impressive 854 episodes and over 40 years of content.
SNL has also covered some controversial topics and had their fair share of episodes that didn't do well with audiences. That being said, the last episode Driver hosted got fairly good reviews. He last hosted the 10th episode of season 41 in January 2016. This episode was at the peak of Driver's career since the highly-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens had just been released a month prior. Now, having another Star Wars film under his belt and fans anticipating the next installment of the sequel trilogy, Driver will be returning for some late night comedy sketches.
Posting on their official SNL Twitter page, NBC announced Driver as the season premiere's host. NBC also set the release date of the episode for September 29, as well as announced Kanye West as the musical guest. The upcoming episode will mark Driver's second appearance on the show but will be West's seventh time performing as the musical guest.
Both Driver and West have remained in the spotlight recently, but each for different reasons. Outside of his Star Wars role as Kylo Ren, Driver has stayed busy starring in films like Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman as well as Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. West, on the other hand, has recently released his eighth studio album titled Ye. While many fans have supported West over the years, a lot of people have turned against him due to his controversial political views.
Despite people's opinions on either performer, both are a safe bet for SNL's season premiere. Even though some people may not support West's political views, he is still a recognizable name in the music industry that will be sure to attract viewers. Many people will also likely tune into the episode to see if Driver will reprise his famous SNL character Matt the Radar Technician, which was part of a Star Wars and Undercover Boss parody skit. The character was considered one of the funniest skits of the episode and some even created a Radar Matt mod in Star Wars: Battlefront II to include the character. While the announcement was only made today, fans of Saturday Night Live won't have to wait very much longer since the first episode of the season is set to premiere in a little over a week.
