Saoirse Ronan is one of the best actors working today. Though still very young, she has had an amazing career already, one which many actors could only dream of. She was nominated for her first Oscar at the age of 13 and has been nominated twice more, all before the age of 25.

Ronan continues to give excellent performances in every role, creating some characters that will be remembered for years to come. She has mostly stuck to doing smaller scale films for acclaimed filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Greta Gerwig, but there has come close to joining some of the biggest film franchises of all-time. Have a look at Saoirse Ronan's best roles and a few of the roles she almost got.

Best: The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson is one of the most popular auteur filmmakers currently working. The distinct style and feel of his film are instantly recognizable, and his talents have led to him assembling some of the most star-studded casts around.

Ronan was able to join Anderson's troupe for one of his best films. The Grand Budapest Hotel follows Gustave, the proud head concierge of the titular hotel and his lobby boy, Zero, as they find themselves wrapped up in a conspiracy. Ronan has a fun supporting role as Zero's girlfriend. She fits perfectly with Anderson's unique tone and helps make create a sweet romance at the film's center.

Almost: The Fantastic Four

Kate Mara Fantastic Four 2015

When it was decided that Fox would reboot the Fantastic Four with a cast of young actors, it seemed like every 20-something in Hollywood was considered for the film. Ronan was apparently among some other notable actors who were being considered to play Sue Storm aka Invisible Woman before Kate Mara was cast.

It's unclear how seriously Ronan was considered for the part or how far she got in the casting process, but this was probably one she was happy to avoid. The film went through serious development issues with director Josh Trank condemning it before its release. It ended up being a miserable critical and financial bomb.

Best: Hanna

While mostly known for her dramatic roles in small film, in Hanna, Ronan proved she had the chops to be a stellar action star as well. The film follows a young girl who is raised in the wilderness as a hardened survivor by her father until the day comes when they must face the government officials who are hunting them.

Ronan, while still very young, excelled in the film's intense action sequences. She also managed to convincingly show that this girl, no matter her abilities, is human. She is scared, curious and excited when introduced to the rest of the world.

Almost: The Hobbit

Bilbo Baggins with his team in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

After the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you would think that any actor would jump at the chance to be involved with Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth. Ronan was offered a chance to reteam with Jackson after working on The Lovely Bones together, this time with The Hobbit.

Ronan ended up turning down the role of an unspecified elf, but she had good reason. The long shooting schedule in New Zealand would have tied up the busy actress, preventing her from taking on other roles, so she declined.

Best: Brooklyn

Being an Irish actress, Ronan seems keen on telling Irish stories on film when the opportunity arises. In Brooklyn, she had the chance to tell a story important to many Irish people in this immigrant tale. Ronan plays a young woman who decides to seek out a new life in America in the 1950s. There, she struggles with which home she should accept and which she must leave behind.

Ronan scored her second Oscar nomination for the role as a sweet, funny and hopeful young woman. Ronan once again proved that, despite her young age, she can carry a film with ease.

Almost: Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Scarlet Witch MCU

At this point, the massive scope of the cinematic universe, it seems pretty hard to find an actor in Hollywood who hasn't been in the MCU. While Ronan is one of those rare cases, she was close at one point to taking the role of Scarlet Witch in the first Avengers sequel.

Marvel was reportedly so keen on Ronan for the role that they were using her as the prototype for the part. In the end, Elizabeth Olsen took the role and Ronan continues to avoid the superhero genre.

Best: Atonement

A close-up of Briony squinting in Atonement

In the same year that Ronan made her feature film debut, she managed to get cast in a central role in this Joe Wright film which earned her an Oscar nomination. In Atonement, Ronan plays Briony, a young girl who tells a lie which impacts the lives of several people for decades that followed.

Ronan virtually owns the movie for the first half as it is focused on her young character. In fact, once the character ages and new actors take over the role, the movie suffers in Ronan's absence. She is heartbreaking as the confused child who doesn't understand the implications of what she's done.

Almost: Harry Potter

Luna Lovegood Reading the Quibbler from Harry Potter

Unlike some of the other big franchises that Ronan has circled before, this is one that she sought out but was ultimately turned down for. Ronan auditioned for the role of Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter franchise, but lost out to fellow Irish actress, Evanna Lynch.

Growing up with the franchise, Ronan has said that the role was a dream job for her. Unfortunately, she was deemed too young for the part for the character who first appeared in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Best: Lady Bird

Lady Bird sitting in a doorway

While Ronan has been considered an incredible talent since the start of her career, this is the role that catapulted her to the top of everyone's list of Hollywood's most talented artists. In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig's semi-autobiographical film, Ronan stars as the titular high schooler struggling with family, popularity and the future.

In a role very different from what she's done before, Ronan creates a classic character. She lets Lady Bird be funny, vulnerable, smart, arrogant and, ultimately, human. Hopefully this film is the first of many collaborations with Gerwig to come.

Almost: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Force Awakens

Daisy Ridley as Rey in Star Wars The Force Awakens

As soon as plans for a new Star Wars trilogy was announced, it's likely a lot of Hollywood’s biggest stars were looking to get themselves a part in it. When it came to the role of Rey, the hero of the new trilogy, many high-profile actresses auditioned for the part, including Ronan.

Ronan confirms that she did try out for the role and even got to wield a lightsaber in the audition which had to have been pretty cool. Unfortunately, she lost the role to Daisey Ridley, who is admittedly excellent as Rey.
