Netflix releases the Santa Clarita Diet season 3 trailer and poster, confirming the series returns later this month. On the horror comedy series, Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant star as a California couple struggling with an important fact: One of them is a zombie.

Created by Victor Fresco, Santa Clarita Diet premiered in February 2017, with the first two episodes directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). In the series, Olyphant portrays the real estate agent Joel Hammond, whose life becomes complicated when his wife Sheila (Barrymore) transforms into a flesh-hungry zombie. Santa Clarita Diet’s first season was positively received by critics, and the series was renewed approximately eight weeks after premiering. Santa Clarita Diet season 2 was unveiled in March 2018, and was also well-received, prompting Netflix to order a new season the following May. Last year, we included Santa Clarita Diet in our list for the “25 Best Netflix Original TV Shows.” The series is known for its edgy visual aesthetic.

Today, Netflix released the Santa Clarita Diet season 3 trailer and poster. Season 3 will premiere on March 29. In the clip, Barrymore’s Sheila muses about a tattooed next-door neighbor who she describes as “a walking protein shake.” More surprised by the wording that the physical intent, Olyphant's Joel listens closely while his wife details her joy for eating humans.

With the premise re-established, the trailer focuses on the couple’s “normal life,” which is anything but that, of course. Using the tagline “True Love Never Dies,” Santa Clarita Diet’s season 3 trailer underlines the powerful bond between Joel and Sheila, along with the concept that Joel can choose to become a zombie but “can never go back.” Overall, the clip suggests that couples must compromise to maintain long-term relationships. Incidentally, Joel’s ongoing internal conflict becomes especially crucial to Santa Clarita Diet’s narrative, as he can be just a regular married man or a regular married man that also happens to be an immortal zombie.

On television, Olyphant is mostly known for his dramatic roles in both HBO’s Deadwood and FX’s Justified, so Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet allows him to display his full skill set. Over the past 20 years, the American actor has also appeared in nearly 40 feature films, and has a role in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming thriller Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. As for Barrymore, she’s primarily known for her extensive film resume that dates back to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. With that said, Barrymore hasn’t appeared in a feature film since 2015, allowing her to focus on Santa Clarita Diet, which she also co-executive produces with Olyphant.

Santa Clarita Diet may not be a perennial awards season contender, but it seems to resonate with Netflix subscribers. Moving forward, there’s incredible potential if Joel Hammond decides to go full-zombie.
