Neil Gaiman reveals the comic book storylines The Sandman season 1 will adapt. Netflix's upcoming adaptation will take on a more modern approach to Gaiman's best-selling graphic novel series, which ran for 75 issues from 1989 to 1996. The fantasy series followed the adventures of Morpheus, or Dream, the Lord of the Dream World. Set in the year 2021, the 11-episode series will focus on Morpheus after being imprisoned for 105 years as he sets out to restore order to his fallen kingdom and return to his realm.
Production on the series is underway, as Gaiman confirmed filming began on The Sandman in mid-October. However, many details surrounding the show still remain a mystery, including the cast. There's been speculation about who might be starring in the series, with Sweetbitter's Tom Sturridge in talks to play the lead role of Dream, while Liam Hemsworth and Stranger Things' Dacre Montgomery have been on the shortlist to play the nightmare Corinthian. However, Netflix has not confirmed any of these casting rumors. While Gaiman, who is also co-creating the series, has kept the show's details largely under wraps, he has been dropping hints on social media about what fans can look forward to in the series, like teasing possible character appearances. Now he is sharing some insight into what parts of the comics the show will focus on.
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Gaiman confirms some of the key storylines from the comic books that will be focused on in the first season. The show will adapt stories from the two volumes of the comics, including Dream a Little Dream of Me, which will feature an appearance from DC superhero John Constantine; A Hope in Hell, which sees Dream pass the gates of Hell; The Sound of Her Wings, widely considered to be one of the best Sandman issues and will see popular character Death make her first appearance; and Collectors, a story set entirely at a serial killer convention.
Gaiman also confirmed that the first season will cover 24 Hours, the infamously disturbing story set entirely at an all-night diner, where the villainous Doctor Destiny manipulates the customers' minds and forces them to confess their darkest secrets. Gaiman promises that all of the nightmarish elements of the comic will be in the show.
Past attempts at adaptations of the beloved Sandman series have not been so successful, but Gaiman's involvement in the series is a huge advantage. It sounds like the Netflix show will be just as gritty and disturbing as Gaiman's original work. Now that Gaiman has confirmed the popular stories that will be covered on screen, fans are now likely even more eager for the show's release.
