In his post, addressed directly to Gaiman, Smith reveals that he has been a longtime fan of The Sandman comics, having read the series since its release in 1989. Smith’s reaction can represent the emotions that many long-time Sandman fans are experiencing right now. With over three decades between the original release of The Sandman comics and today’s TV series, audiences have had years to imagine how cinematic versions of Dream and the other Sandman characters may appear. Now, those visions have finally come to fruition in the high-production value and visually-ambitious Sandman TV series.

To deem The Sandman Gaiman’s magnum opus is also a bold and powerful claim. Gaiman is one of the most adapted and most celebrated living authors today. From Coraline to American Gods, Gaiman’s work has been adapted into both films and TV series that have been just as if not more appreciated than his original works, and Gaiman is often heavily involved in assisting the adaptation process. With The Sandman, Gaiman may top himself yet again, especially as the series develops future seasons. Perhaps Smith's assessment isn't that far off.
