Netflix unveils new Sandman footage revealing more of Tom Sturridge's titular character and the first look at Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer. The Game of Thrones alum becomes the third actor to portray the ruler of Hell created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for the DC Comics after Peter Stormare played the character in 2005's Constantine movie and Tom Ellis starred in the eponymous Fox/Netflix series. Ellis would also carry on his Lucifer role in the Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, which takes place five years before the start of his series, which recently ended its run on Netflix.

Development on an adaptation of Gaiman's The Sandman, from which his version of Lucifer spawned, has languished for 30 years, with various attempts made to bring it to the big screen, including one with Joseph Gordon-Levitt starring and directing, that all fell apart. Gaiman, Warner Bros. Television and producer David S. Goyer would ultimately turn their attention towards television, inking a deal with Netflix in 2019 for a 12-episode series developed by the two and Wonder Woman co-writer Allan Heinberg. With production having run from October 2020 to August 2021, The Sandman's arrival is right around the corner and audiences are finally getting a better glimpse at what's to come from the series.

As summer quickly approaches, Netflix has announced the return of Geeked Week with a trailer full of footage from their extensive library. One of the titles included is that of The Sandman, with plenty of footage teasing the long-awaited series adaptation and revealing the first look at Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer. Check out the exciting trailer below:

The new Sandman footage comes nearly a year after Netflix released the first proper footage from the series during its TUDUM event in September, which showed a look at Tom Sturridge's Dream as he is captured in an occult ritual. The new video should create further anticipation for the series, thanks to the gorgeous visuals capturing the fantastical comic book world born from Gaiman's mind and the hands of artists Kieth, Dringenberg and many others. With a recent report indicating that The Sandman's budget is costing $15 million per episode, the new footage for the series looks to be taking full advantage of that mammoth financial backing.

The biggest takeaway from the new Sandman footage is sure to be that of Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer, who Gaiman and co. have sought to depict in a more comics faithful manner than previous adaptations of the character. Though some have expressed disappointment that Ellis wouldn't be returning for the Netflix series, fans of the comics are sure to find the first look at Christie's Lucifer to be an enticing draw given the similarity in hairstyles between the two, as well as her suave demeanor and menacing wings. With more Sandman footage set to come during next month's Geeked Week, one can hope a release date announcement will also be included in the June event.
