The first image of Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer in Netflix's adaption of The Sandman has been revealed. Christie, who shot to fame as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, also stared as Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and briefly in its sequel The Last Jedi. The actress has also signed on to star in the latest live-action adaption of The Addams Family, a Tim Burton-directed story focusing on the character Wednesday Addams.

The Sandman follows Dream, a member of the Endless, a group of seven anthropomorphic embodiments of existence, who escapes a century-long captivity to restore his kingdom of the Dreaming. The series incorporates many of author Neil Gaiman's signature themes, such as horror and mythology. Despite being set in the DC Universe, the series rarely involves characters from other DC comics, instead focusing on original characters inspired by myth and legend. Originally running from 1989 to 1996, Gaiman's dark fantasy series is considered both the author's magnum opus and essential DC reading.

Revealed as part of the virtual DC FanDome event, the first images of Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer shows her unique take on the Lord of Hell. In the first photo, Christie, sporting a high collar black jacket and blonde, shaggy wig, looks imposing in the non-traditional take on Lucifer. A second picture shows a pair of black, rubbery wings more in line with expectations for the devil himself. Take a look, below:

The posters are the latest teases for Netflix's The Sandman adaption. Three weeks ago, during their TUDUM event, the streaming service shared the trailer for The Sandman. This trailer, which features Tom Sturridge's take on the lead, Dream, also shows the first look at Charles Dance's Roderick Burgess, the man responsible for imprisoning the King of Dreams. Despite only clocking in at just over a minute long, the trailer shows that Netflix have captured the intoxicating moodiness that made The Sandman a success for both Gaiman and DC.

For their depiction of Lucifer, Netflix's The Sandman is clearly sticking with the ethereal and beautiful look for the fallen angel as seen in the comics. In fact, the Lucifer TV show is based on the same version of the character from DC Comics, but went for a decidedly more devilish appearance for Tom Ellis. Christie's version, however, with the blonde hair and soft lighting appears far more angelic. Except, of course, for the leathery wings and the way their shadows cast on her face to look like horns. Clearly, the imagery is playing on Lucifer's fickle temperament, flitting between being friend or foe. It'll be interesting to see how else The Sandman makes their version of Lucifer stand out when the series finally releases.
