A new image from The Sandman gives a glimpse at Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer and Tom Sturridge’s Dream. The Sandman will premiere on Netflix later this summer with all episodes available at the time of release. In addition to Christie and Sturridge, the series stars Jenna Coleman, Joely Richardson, Patton Oswalt, David Thewlis, and John Cameron Mitchell. The series was co-created by Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg.

The Sandman is based on the critically-acclaimed graphic novel series of the same name, written by Gaiman. Gaiman’s comic series was published between 1989-1996. Like the graphic novel series, the TV show will follow a character named Dream (also known as Morpheus), who is the literal manifestation of Dream. Dream is imprisoned by a mortal wizard for 100 years and is finally released into modern times. Once Morpheus / Dream is released, he must use his magical powers to restore the realm of The Dreaming. The Sandman’s trailer showed great promise in living up to the beloved graphic novels. The trailer had incredible imagery, crafting a grandiose fantasy world.

Part of that mystical realm is unveiled in a new image of Christie and Sturridge’s characters from Empire. In the center is Dream, kneeling with a sullen gaze towards the floor. He is set in front of the backdrop of a marbled, castle-like room with an open back revealing ominous red smoke. To the left stands Christie’s Lucifer, clad in white robes. Check out the image below:

Christie is no stranger to the world of grand sci-fi and fantasy characters. The actress previously played Captain Phasma in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi as well as Commander Lyme in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2Christie is most known for her role as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones. With this experience behind her, Christie is sure to be a great addition to The Sandman cast. Though this new image does not reveal much more about her character other than her look, it is known that Lucifer is a fallen angel, so the character will certainly have its mystical qualities.

With the praise and fanbase that The Sandman comics have garnered since their release, the Netflix series certainly has large shoes to fill. From initial looks, it looks like The Sandman will, at minimum, deliver its fair share of sweeping sets and special effects in its creation of the realm of The Dreaming. This new image is no exception, showing Lucifer and Dream within an ominous fantasy landscape. Sandman fans can immerse themselves into this world when The Sandman premieres on Netflix on August 5, 2022.
