Netflix has released an exclusive first look at their upcoming live-action adaptation of The Sandman. This series will be based on the landmark comics by Neil Gaiman, which originally ran from January 1989 to March 1996. The story follows Dream, one of the Endless, seven immortal siblings who represent metaphysical concepts of the world. Dream, also called Morpheus, is captured during World War I and escapes in the modern-day, calling upon the other Endless (Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Destruction, and Delirium) to restore his kingdom of the Dreaming. Producer David S. Goyer has promised that The Sandman will tackle the series' toughest and most unfilmable stories in a way that is "interesting and genre-bending."

The Sandman cast includes Tom Sturridge as Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer (the same character portrayed by Tom Ellis in Netflix's Lucifer), Boyd Holdbrook as Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death. The first season will be adapting the first two volumes of the comic book, which covers 16 issues. Sandman completed filming on season 1 this August, though until now no further details have been confirmed.

At Netflix's global live stream fan event TUDUM, Neil Gaiman, Tom Sturridge, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste revealed the first look at The Sandman. They shared a short video teasing the way the series will breathe life into the psychedelic fantasy world of the original comic. In addition, they announced the opening of the show's social media pages, where first look character posters are also being released. Check out the first trailer for The Sandman, below:

"You're gonna need all the help you can get," warns this clip. In the exclusive video, audiences witnessed a group of hooded figures led by Charles Dance summon Tom Sturridge's Dream, who arrives naked in the center of a pentacle, Terminator-style. Even locked in a Loki-style prison, Dream exudes a magnetic presence, imbued with pure power despite his angelic, boyish looks. He surely won't be in captivity long.

Netflix hasn't given fans too much to chew on yet, but what this short trailer shows is that they will be taking their duties quite seriously. Neil Gaiman is producing The Sandman as well as co-writing the pilot, so he's on board to steer the ship in exactly the right direction. Everything in this first look screams "epic," and the fans who have waited almost two and a half decades for a live-action glimpse to come to light are surely reveling right now.
