Netflix unveils character posters for The Sandman series adaptation, offering the first look at Kirby Howell-Baptiste's live-action Death. Based on Neil Gaiman's Vertigo comic book series of the same name, the story revolves around Dream the king of stories and one of the seven Endless, who is captured in an occult ritual. After being held captive for 105 years, he escapes in the year 2021 and sets out to restore order to his kingdom of the Dreaming.

The Sandman series is being developed by Wonder Woman co-writer Allan Heinberg alongside executive producer Gaiman, who has promised to be deeper involved with the series than Starz' adaptation of American Gods though less so than Amazon's Good Omens. The cast for the series includes Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, also known as Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, and Howell-Baptiste as Death, amongst others. Following 20 years of languishing in development hell, filming on The Sandman began in October 2020 and wrapped this past August.

Though the titular hero may seemingly be the more iconic of those introduced in Gaiman's comics, Death is arguably one of the most remembered and celebrated from The Sandman. Contrary to her name's sadder nature, the character of Death is generally depicted as a pleasant, down-to-earth and perky being, much to the contrast of her namesake and grim brother. The first look at Howell-Baptiste's Death may be clouded in darkness, but the kinder soul of her character is still thoroughly evident in the slight smile and bright eyes emanating from the center of the poster.

The first looks at Dream and Desire in The Sandman are sure to also come as exciting first teases for fans of Gaiman's comics. Though the former's hair may be slightly shorter than his comic book counterpart, the moody nature of his appearance and the looks at his iconic helmet and raven companion, the latter of whom is voiced by Patton Oswalt, proves to be a faithful translation of the character's source material. Only time will tell what the series has in store for Dream, Death and the rest of the Endless whenever Netflix finally drops the first trailer for The Sandman.
