The Sandman season 2 is given an exciting update by VFX Supervisor Ian Markiewicz, confirming that there is indeed a framework for it in place. The Sandman hit Netflix on August 5 and received a largely positive reception. The series came about after decades of attempts at adapting Neil Gaiman's comic book series of the same name, but all fell through. Like the comic books, Netflix's The Sandman follows Morpheus, aka Dream (Tom Surridge), one of the seven Endless who has been imprisoned for over a century. Upon escaping, he returns to his realm, The Dreaming, to reassert his power over it once more.
The Sandman season 2 has not been renewed officially, but its positive reception and the potential to expand the storyline bode well for it. There is certainly still a lot of source material to be used, as Gaiman's comic book series spans 75 issues. In addition to this, The Sandman enjoyed a lengthy stay on Netflix's Top 10 list of most-watched TV shows. Its high praise and high viewership have even led to some fans demanding that Netflix renew the series.
In an interview with Screen Rant, The Sandman's VFX Supervisor, Markiewicz, gave an exciting update about season 2. Markiewicz confirmed that The Sandman crew isn't waiting for a renewal to start working on season 2. In fact, they've constructed a strong framework for it already. While the scripts are still being reworked, they definitely do have a story arc and are now working on fine-tuning all the details to ensure the best approach possible to season 2. We have a really wonderful framework for what we think season 2 looks like. Allan is still touching up scripts and reworking things, but we have an arc. Up until pretty recently, I think maybe even two weeks or so, Gary, our production designer, myself and Allan meet over lunch, and we will do a script over that meeting. It's like, "Okay, let's look at 201," and we'll do our breakdowns together, where we do page turns on 201, and we say, "Okay, what do we think? Where can we film this? Can we film this in a real space? If not, what do we need to build, if we need to build it? Are we building this as a physical set, or can it be a building as a virtual set or a combination thereof? Is it physical to a certain extent, and then digital beyond that?" Just trying to break each one down to be like, "What's the most value for this, what's the most sensible way that covers the need for what we need it to be?" That process is happening now, which is great, and it's really fun and exciting to be able to sort of have season 1 and behind us to know what we feel worked there, things that we wanted to sort of finesse further, and how that impacts our approach for season 2.
Markiewicz's statement isn't a confirmation that The Sandman season 2 will happen. However, it confirms that if, or when, that renewal comes around, The Sandman crew will be ready to jump right in. The fact that there are solid plans for season 2, a story arc, and a fine-tuning process being employed, means that the crew is cautiously hopeful for a renewal. It also means that viewers can be hopeful for big things in season 2. Now that season 1 has passed, all The Sandman crew's efforts are focused on season 2 and forming a solid plan to make it as valuable as possible.
Ultimately, the impatience for The Sandman's renewal is understandable. The series concluded almost a month ago and many fans feel that it has proved itself to be successful. At the same time, there isn't much to be done besides respecting the process. Fortunately, The Sandman crew isn't letting impatience or frustration get in the way of what needs to be done and are still working on season 2. After all, even if Netflix chooses not to renew The Sandman, there's a chance it could be picked up by another streaming service. Hence, Markiewicz's The Sandman update assures fans that the crew is planning season 2 and will be ready regardless of what the renewal outcome is.
