Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for The Sandman season 1.Following their thrilling battle in its debut season, creator Neil Gaiman says that The Sandman season 2 will feature a Dream and Lucifer rematch. Development on an adaptation of Gaiman’s works spent the better part of three decades floundering, with the comic book creator shutting down a variety of efforts he considered to be poor. Gaiman and Warner Bros. would eventually divert their efforts to bringing The Sandman to television, first looking to Supernatural creator Eric Kripke and Logan director James Mangold, the former pitch of which Gaiman disapproved of and eventually partnered with Blade writer David S. Goyer, who was set to produce and develop a film adaptation, and Wonder Woman’s Allan Heinberg for a Netflix series.

Tom Sturridge leads the cast of The Sandman as Dream, one of the seven Endless who finds himself captured and imprisoned for a century by occultist Roderick Burgess, eventually escaping and finding his Kingdom of the Dreaming in ruins. Dream sets out to recover his totems of power to help restore his Kingdom, turning to a variety of people for help, including his Endless sibling, Kirby Howell-Baptiste’s Death, Jenna Coleman’s Johanna Constantine and Vivienne Acheampong’s Lucienne. The Sandman also finds Dream pitted against a variety of threats, including Boyd Holbrook’s escaped nightmare The Corinthian, David Thewlis’ unhinged John Dee and Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer Morningstar, the latter of whom audiences are going to see more of in the future, according to Gaiman.

While speaking with Newsweek for the Netflix series, Neil Gaiman opened up about what audiences can expect from The Sandman season 2. The comic book and show creator teased that viewers aren’t prepared for what comes next and confirmed season 2 will feature a Dream and Lucifer rematch. See what Gaiman said below:

"[W]e just carry on with this story [in Season 2]. That's kind of marvelous that anybody who has seen Season 1… when we tell them that Season 2 [is] going to begin with the big Lucifer-Morpheus rematch they get very excited. Little do they know what's going to happen and that they are simply not prepared for where it's gonna go."

Though Gwendoline Christie taking over as Lucifer for The Sandman from Lucifer star Tom Ellis was met with division amongst fans of the latter series, her turn as the ruler of Hell scored largely favorable reviews, namely with Lucifer and Dream’s duel in episode 4. Gaiman previously praised how the series adapted The Oldest Game and explained the decision to changing it from a basic duel against a demon to Lucifer as wanting to capitalize on having Christie in the series. Gaiman also previously teased that a potential The Sandman season 2 would adapt elements from the fourth volume of the comics, Season of Mists, which saw Lucifer expel all demons and damned souls from Hell, abdicated as its ruler and left Morpheus to key to Hell, essentially placing him in charge.

Given Gaiman’s note of what will be adapted in the show’s future, it’s interesting that he says a potential The Sandman season 2 will feature a Dream and Lucifer rematch, seemingly indicating either some changes to the source material. On the other hand, Gaiman’s comments could also point towards a minor change in setting up the Season of Mists storyline, with the two having a rematch over Dream’s desire to recover Nada’s soul from Hell and ultimately resulting in Lucifer’s departure as ruler. While audiences await a hopeful renewal announcement, they can catch up with The Sandman season 1 streaming on Netflix now.
