Prolific author Neil Gaiman confirms that production on The Sandman season 1 is wrapped and post-production is currently underway. Development on an adaptation of Gaiman's graphic novels of the same name has languished in development hell for 25 years, with many attempts for a film translation made including one with Joseph Gordon-Levitt set to star and potentially direct. However, after that story fell apart, producers elected to shift their efforts to television with Netflix ordering a series adaptation in 2019 with Wonder Woman co-writer Allan Heinberg developing and executive producing with David S. Goyer and Gaiman, the latter of whom would be more involved than the Starz adaptation of American Gods though less than Amazon's Good Omens.

The Sandman first launched in 1989 under the Vertigo label before DC Comics retired it and transitioned it into the DC Black Label. The series centered on Dream, one of the seven Endless who is captured during an occult ritual in World War I until escaping into the modern day. Dream, also known as Morpheus and various other names, begins a journey to restore his kingdom of the Dreaming with the help of the others of his kind: Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Destruction and Delirium, previously known as Delight.

After having started production this past October, one fan took to Tumblr to ask Gaiman for an update on the filming of The Sandman. The author confirmed that principal photography has officially wrapped and post-production is currently underway, noting he couldn't confirm any release dates but praising the work thus far on the adaptation. Given the elongated development cycle of an adaptation of The Sandman, Gaiman's confirmation that principal photography has officially wrapped on season 1 of the series should come as exciting news for fans. While Gaiman's relationship with Amazon Prime is growing in new directions with Good Omens being renewed for season 2 and an adaptation of Anansi Boys entering development, the world of television certainly won't be short on Gaiman's unique visions, but The Sandman is something that audiences have been jonesing for since development on the film was first announced in 1996. Though the character of Lucifer would go on to receive his own series at Fox and Netflix starring Tom Ellis, the bizarre journey of Dream has been a curiosity for readers to see how it could translate to the screen.

With Gaiman's bigger involvement in The Sandman, partially thanks to producer Goyer's efforts to have him involved, many have already set a high bar of anticipation, though the author's new comments are sure to raise that bar higher. Praising both its authentic tone and translation to the screen, as well as Tom Sturridge's performance as Dream, it appears the long wait for an adaptation will finally be worth it. With principal photography wrapped and post-production already underway, new word should be right around the corner from Netflix.
