The Sandman star Jenna Coleman takes to social media to tease her return as sorceress Johanna Constantine in the hit Netflix show. Based on the comics by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman premiered on Netflix in August, earning strong reviews from both audiences and critics. Despite quickly becoming one of the streamer's most-watched shows, an announcement regarding The Sandman season 2 eluded fans for several months, with the streamer only just announcing earlier this week that additional episodes are indeed in the works. The series follows Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), ruler of the Dreaming, who sets out to restore order to his realm and retrieve his belongings following his 100-year imprisonment.

In his quest to recover his helm, his sand, and his ruby, Morpheus comes into contact with Johanna Constantine. Although the source material featured both Johanna and the more well-known John Constantine, the show made the decision to combine the two magic users into one character, played by Coleman. The necromancer and occult detective features sparingly in The Sandman, but makes a strong impression. In addition to playing the present-day version of Constantine in The Sandman, Coleman also plays Lady Johanna Constantine, the character's 18th-century ancestor.

Following the announcement that The Sandman saga will continue, star Jenna Coleman has taken to Instagram to tease Johanna Constantine's return. Accompanying a caption that simply teases there's more of Constantine on the way, Coleman shares an image, featured above, of her in character with Tom Sturridge's Morpheus. Coleman's post is light on details, but fans in the comments are clearly excited by the prospect of Constantine's return.

How The Sandman Can Bring Back Jenna Coleman's Johanna Constantine

Although Johanna Constantine was a relatively minor character in The Sandman source material, Coleman's take on the necromancer won over fans after only appearing in a few episodes, so she could be a more prominent part of future storylines. While no official synopsis has been revealed for The Sandman's additional episodes, Gaiman's comics suggest that Constantine could play an important role to come as Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) sets out to exact her revenge on Morpheus following the events of season 1. It's also possible that Lady Johanna Constantine makes a return as well, with potential storylines involving Morpheus' adventures during the 18th century.

It remains to be seen how Constantine will return in The Sandman, but Gaiman himself clearly really likes the character and has even expressed interest in a Johanna Constantine spinoff show on Netflix. There may not have been much screen time between Morpheus and Constantine in the show, but future episodes could potentially rectify this by seeing the two characters team up in some form. While many questions remain about Constantine's role in future episodes of The Sandman, Coleman is clearly ready to get back to work, and fans are just as ready to see what will come next.
