A sequel TV series to the beloved 1993 classic film The Sandlot is on the way, with the original cast set to return. Last year was the film's 25th anniversary and it was reported that a prequel was in the making at 20th Century Fox.  The original film spawned two direct-to-video sequels, but neither are discussed as much as the first film. Despite its lackluster critical reception, The Sandlot has developed a cult following over the years and is regarded as one of the best coming-of-age movies in recent memory.

Set in 1962, The Sandlot followed a group of neighborhood boys that loved to play baseball. Most of the story is told from the perspective of Scottie Smalls, the new kid in town who quickly becomes involved with Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez and his friends. The group spends their days playing baseball, hanging out in treehouses, and causing mischief around town. Their fun is brought to an abrupt halt when one of their balls travels to the other side of the fence and becomes trapped with the monstrous dog known as The Beast. Now, after two decades since its release, original writer and director David Mickey Evans has plans for audiences to be reunited with the original cast in the upcoming sequel TV series.

During an episode of The Rain DelayEvans announced that The Sandlot was getting a sequel TV series with the original cast returning. Offering brief details on the series, Evans revealed that it would take place in 1984 with all of the boys now grown up and with children of their own, who will presumably have a love for baseball as well. Evans also stated that the series will air on a streaming platform, but couldn't name which one landed the series.

Whether or not the series will be titled The Sandlot is yet to be known, but it will presumably have a familiar title. The Sandlot is considered a classic by those that grew up in the '90s and its legacy only continues to grow stronger. Several phrases such as "You're Killin' me, Smalls!" are used in reference to the film's impact on pop culture. While Evans has revealed that the series will catch up with the original cast, the ending of the first movie offered details on where they all ended up, so hopefully, that continuity is taken into consideration for the upcoming TV series.

It is not clear if this project is going to be connected to the upcoming prequel, but more details should arrive sooner rather than later. The Sandlot is certainly a pivotal tale for fans of baseball, but it managed to captivate an entire generation by being an entertaining film about summer days as an adolescent. While it is not known when the sequel TV series will launch, fans of the original will hopefully have something to binge sooner than later.
